Daily Supplications

Sleep and Waking Supplications

Praise be to Allah, Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his companions.

Sleep and waking supplications are among the great daily remembrances a Muslim needs every day and night. They combine reliance upon Allah, entrusting one's affairs to Him, ending the day with His remembrance, and beginning it with praise and gratitude. Sleep is the minor death, and waking is a renewed blessing worthy of praise and thanks.

Allah Most High says: "Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die during their sleep." [Az-Zumar: 42]
And He says: "And it is He who takes your souls by night." [Al-An'am: 60]
Why They Matter

Why Are Sleep and Waking Supplications Important?

  • Ending the day with the remembrance of Allah and reliance upon Him.
  • Seeking protection from devils and harm.
  • Remembering the blessing of life upon waking.
  • Strengthening the heart's connection to Allah at the beginning and end of the day.
  • Training oneself to follow the Sunnah even in the smallest daily habits.
Prophetic Guidance

From the Prophet's Guidance at Bedtime

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, paid clear attention to these supplications. He taught his companions what to say when lying down, what to recite before sleep, and what to say and do upon waking.

Ablution, Sleeping on the Right Side, and Al-Bara's Supplication

When you go to your bed, perform ablution as you do for prayer, then lie on your right side and say: O Allah, I submit my face to You, entrust my affair to You, and rely upon You in hope and fear of You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except with You. O Allah, I believe in Your Book which You revealed and in Your Prophet whom You sent.

This narration combines purification, sleeping on the right side, and ending the day with one of the greatest supplications of surrender and trust.

Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Sleep Supplication 2

Reciting Ayat al-Kursi Before Sleep

Allah - there is no god worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not tire Him. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

It is authentically reported in the story of Abu Hurayrah that whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi before sleeping will remain under Allah's protection, and no devil will come near him until morning.

Narrated by Al-Bukhari. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He told you the truth, although he is a liar."

Sleep Supplication 3

Reciting Al-Ikhlas and Al-Mu'awwidhatayn and Blowing into the Palms

Recite: Say, He is Allah, One; Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak; and Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind. Then blow lightly into the palms and wipe over as much of the body as possible, repeating this three times.

From A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her. Narrated by Al-Bukhari.

Sleep Supplication 4

Reciting the Last Two Verses of Surah Al-Baqarah

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers, saying: We make no distinction between any of His messengers. And they say: We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the final return. [2:285]

Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. It will have the reward of what it earned, and it will bear the burden of what it committed. Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, do not place upon us a burden like that which You placed upon those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with what we have no strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so grant us victory over the disbelieving people. [2:286]

Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him. They are among the greatest recitations to preserve before sleep.

Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Sleep Supplication 5

Saying Tasbih, Tahmid, and Takbir Before Sleep

When you go to bed, say Allahu Akbar thirty-four times, Subhan Allah thirty-three times, and Alhamdulillah thirty-three times.

This remembrance is better for a Muslim than many worldly things, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, advised Fatimah and 'Ali with it.

Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Sleep Supplication 6

In Your Name, O Allah, I Die and I Live

In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.

Narrated by Al-Bukhari.

Sleep Supplication 7

O Allah, Protect Me from Your Punishment on the Day You Resurrect Your Servants

O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants.

When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, wished to sleep, he would place his right hand beneath his cheek and say this supplication.

Narrated by Abu Dawud. It was authenticated by a number of scholars.

Waking Supplications
Waking Supplication 1

Praise Be to Allah Who Gave Us Life After Causing Us to Die

Praise be to Allah, who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.

This is one of the greatest ways for a Muslim to begin the day, because it praises Allah for the blessing of life after sleep.

Narrated by Al-Bukhari.

Waking Supplication 2

Supplication for One Who Wakes During the Night

None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things competent. Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and there is no power and no might except with Allah. Then he says: O Allah, forgive me.

Whoever says this when waking at night and then supplicates will be answered; and if he performs ablution and prays, his prayer will be accepted.

Narrated by Al-Bukhari.

Neglected Sunnahs

Neglected Sunnahs Upon Waking

  • Begin with praising Allah by saying: Praise be to Allah, who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.
  • If one rises during the night, it is Sunnah to use the siwak, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would clean his mouth with the siwak when he got up at night.
  • If one intends to make ablution after waking, it is Sunnah to rinse the nose and blow it out three times, for Satan spends the night in the nostrils.
  • From his guidance when waking at night was to wipe sleep from the face with the hand, then recite the last ten verses of Surah Aal 'Imran when rising for night prayer.
