Daily Supplications

Evening Supplications

Praise be to Allah, Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his companions.

Evening supplications are among the greatest remembrances with which a Muslim ends his day. In them are turning to Allah, seeking His help, asking for protection and well-being, and entrusting oneself, one’s family, and the whole night to Allah, Glorified and Exalted. They are among the causes of tranquility, firmness of heart, and safety from harm by Allah’s permission.

Allah Most High says: “So glorify your Lord with praise in the evening and the morning.” [Ghafir: 55]
And He says: “And remember your Lord often.” [Aal 'Imran: 41]
Brief Definition

What Are Evening Supplications?

They are the established supplications and remembrances a Muslim says at the end of the day, especially after 'Asr until sunset, or in the beginning of the night for one who missed them in their preferred time, seeking Allah’s protection and the blessing of remembering Him.

Their Virtue

The Virtue of Evening Supplications

  • They protect the Muslim by Allah’s permission.
  • They tie the heart to Allah as the day comes to an end.
  • They combine tawhid, supplication, seeking refuge, and gratitude.
  • They help bring calmness and good reliance upon Allah.
  • They remind the servant of Allah’s blessings throughout the day and night.
Time of Dhikr

The Time for Evening Supplications

The best time for evening supplications is after the 'Asr prayer until sunset. This is the preferred time indicated by the remembrance of Allah in the evening and late afternoon, and it was mentioned by a number of scholars. If a Muslim misses them in that time, there is no harm in saying them in the early part of the night or up to about the first third of the night according to many scholars.

As for morning supplications, their best time is from the break of dawn until sunrise. If they are missed, some scholars said they may still be said later in the morning before noon.

In short:

  • Morning supplications: best after Fajr until sunrise.
  • Evening supplications: best after 'Asr until sunset.
  • The sooner one begins the dhikr in its proper time, the more complete it is in following the Sunnah.

Evening Supplication 1

Reciting Ayat al-Kursi

Allah - there is no god worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not tire Him. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
Repeat: once

Reports and narrations have been mentioned about reciting it in the morning and evening, and some scholars considered them sound or acceptable. Its virtue before sleep is firmly established in Sahih al-Bukhari.

{قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ . اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ . لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ . وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ}

{قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ . مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ . وَمِنْ شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ . وَمِنْ شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ . وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ}

{قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ . مَلِكِ النَّاسِ . إِلَهِ النَّاسِ . مِنْ شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ . الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ . مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ}

It is reported regarding its virtue after Maghrib that whoever says it ten times right after Maghrib, Allah sends for him a guard detail that protects him from Satan until morning, ten binding good deeds are written for him, ten destructive sins are erased from him, and it is equivalent for him to freeing ten believing slaves.
