How to Repent to Allah Sincerely
All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds, and peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
How to repent to Allah sincerely is an important question for every Muslim who wants salvation and success. Repentance is one of the greatest doors of Allah's mercy. It is among the greatest acts of the heart and limbs, and no one is free of sin, shortcomings, or moments of heedlessness. Out of His mercy, Allah opened the door of tawbah for His servants, called them to it, and promised to accept it from those who return to Him truthfully.
This topic should be understood according to the way of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah: through the Book of Allah, the authentic Sunnah of His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم, and the understanding of the Companions رضي الله عنهم and the righteous early generations.
Allah says:
"And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, so that you may succeed." [Surah An-Nur 24:31]
This is a general call to all believers, because every servant is in need of repentance, no matter what his condition may be.
What is sincere repentance?
Sincere repentance, or tawbah nasuh, is truthful and pure repentance in which a person returns to Allah with a humbled heart, regrets what has passed, resolves not to return to the sin, and seeks Allah's forgiveness and pardon.
Allah says:
"O you who believe, repent to Allah with sincere repentance." [Surah At-Tahrim 66:8]
Sincere repentance is not just words spoken on the tongue. It is a real return to Allah whose effects appear in the heart, actions, and conduct.
Why should you repent quickly?
Because no one knows when death may come, and because sins harden the heart when they accumulate. A person may even be deprived of obedience, tranquility, and the sweetness of worship because of sin.
Allah says:
"And it is He who accepts repentance from His servants and pardons misdeeds." [Surah Ash-Shura 42:25]
The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
"O people, repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness, for I repent to Him one hundred times a day." Narrated by Muslim.
If the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم, whose past and future sins were forgiven, repented so often, then we are even more in need of repentance.
What are the conditions of sincere repentance?
The scholars mention well-known conditions for valid repentance:
Stop the sin immediately.
Feel true regret for what has passed.
Make a firm resolve not to return to it.
Return the rights of others if the sin involved other people.
1. Stop the sin
Repentance is not valid while a person continues the sin. If someone claims repentance while persisting in wrongdoing, then that claim needs honesty and review.
2. Feel regret
Regret is one of the greatest pillars of repentance. If the heart does not feel pain for the sin, that shows weakness in recognizing how serious it is.
3. Resolve not to return
A person must sincerely intend not to go back to the sin. If weakness overcomes him later and he falls again, then he should renew his repentance truthfully. The door of Allah remains open as long as the soul has not reached the throat and the sun has not risen from the west.
4. Return people's rights
If the sin involved money, honor, or injustice toward others, then the right must be returned or forgiveness sought in the proper Islamically sound way.
How do you begin repentance in practice?
If you want to repent sincerely, start with these steps:
Leave the sin immediately.
Make wudu and pray two rak'ahs if possible.
Increase in istighfar and dua.
Stay away from the causes that lead you back to the sin.
Replace the sin with righteous deeds.
Keep the company of people who help you remain firm.
Allah says:
"Except for those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds." [Surah Al-Furqan 25:70]
Allah joined repentance with faith and righteous deeds because good deeds strengthen repentance and support the heart.
Will Allah accept repentance no matter how great the sin?
Yes. As long as the soul has not reached the throat and the sun has not risen from the west, the door of repentance remains open.
Allah says:
"Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.'" [Surah Az-Zumar 39:53]
This is one of the greatest verses of hope in the Book of Allah. So the sinner must not despair, just as he must not delay repentance and continue in sin.
Signs of sincere repentance
becoming more humble before Allah after repenting
staying away from the places and causes of sin
increasing in righteous deeds after sin
fearing a return to the wrongdoing
hoping in Allah while continuing to fear one's shortcomings
What if you fall into the sin again?
Do not despair, and do not say there is no benefit in trying. Return to Allah again, struggle against yourself, identify what led you back to the sin, and cut it off. Many people give up repentance because they fall again, and this is one of the traps of Shaytan.
The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم mentioned in a sacred hadith the case of a servant who sins, repents, then sins again and repents, and Allah says that His servant knew he had a Lord who forgives sin and takes people to account.
The point is that as long as a person returns to Allah sincerely every time he falls, he is upon great خير and hope.
Things that help you stay firm after repentance

increasing in istighfar

delaying repentance because you think there is still plenty of time

Frequently Asked Questions About Repenting to Allah
Do I have to tell anyone about my sins?
No. The basic rule is that a person should conceal himself and repent to Allah privately without exposing himself to people.
Is repentance accepted for a repeated sin?
Yes. If each repentance is sincere and fulfills its conditions, then it is accepted by Allah's permission. If a person falls again out of weakness, he should renew repentance and never despair.
Is saying istighfar alone enough?
Istighfar is one of the greatest acts of worship, but it is not enough by itself if it is not joined with leaving the sin, feeling regret, resolving not to return, and restoring people's rights when necessary.
What is a good dua for repentance?
Among the best things to say are words of istighfar, such as: "Allahumma ighfir li wa tub 'alayya innaka anta at-Tawwab ar-Rahim," and also Sayyid al-Istighfar, which is authentically reported in the Sunnah.
Conclusion
Sincere repentance is one of the greatest doors of Allah's mercy, and it is never closed to the one who returns to Him truthfully. No matter how great the sin may be, Allah's mercy is greater, and His forgiveness is wider. But Allah loves truthfulness, humility, and a real return to Him.
So repent today before tomorrow, increase in seeking forgiveness, correct what you can, and turn to Allah with a truthful heart. Whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah, Allah replaces it with something better.
