Dhikr And Worship

The Virtue of Sending Salah upon the Prophet

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and companions.

Sending salah upon the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم is among the noblest forms of dhikr and the greatest acts of nearness to Allah. Allah commanded His believing servants to do it, and placed in it great reward, raising of ranks, and forgiveness of sins by His permission.

"Indeed, Allah and His angels send salah upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send salah upon him and greet him with peace." [Al-Ahzab: 56]

This verse shows the honor of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and the greatness of sending salah and salam upon him.

Virtues

"Whoever sends salah upon me once, Allah sends salah upon him ten times."

Narrated by Muslim.

"The closest people to me on the Day of Resurrection are those who send the most salah upon me."

Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi and graded hasan by scholars.

"May the nose of a man be rubbed in dust: I am mentioned in his presence and he does not send salah upon me."

Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi and authenticated by scholars.

Among its great virtues is what was narrated from Ubayy ibn Ka'b رضي الله عنه, who said:

I said: O Messenger of Allah, I often send salah upon you, so how much of my supplication should I make for you? He said: Whatever you wish. I said: A quarter? He said: Whatever you wish, and if you increase, it is better for you. I said: Half? He said: Whatever you wish, and if you increase, it is better for you. I said: Two thirds? He said: Whatever you wish, and if you increase, it is better for you. I said: Should I make all of my supplication for you? He said: Then your worries will be taken care of, and your sin will be forgiven.

Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi and graded hasan by scholars.

The meaning of "make my salah for you" is that he would dedicate a large portion of his supplication to sending salah upon the Prophet The hadith shows the great virtue of increasing in salah upon him, and that it is a cause for worries to be relieved and sins to be forgiven by Allah's permission, while the servant may still make du'a for his other needs.

Best Forms

The Best Form of Sending Salah upon the Prophet

The best and most complete forms include the Ibrahimic salah that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم taught his companions:

O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

Agreed upon.

Another authentic form is:

O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad, his wives, and his offspring, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim. Bless Muhammad, his wives, and his offspring, as You blessed the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

Agreed upon.

Narrated by Abu Dawud and An-Nasa'i, and authenticated by scholars.

Before Du'a

Sending Salah upon the Prophet Before Du'a

Among the etiquettes of du'a is that a Muslim begins by praising Allah, then sends salah upon the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, then asks for whatever he wishes.

"When one of you prays, let him begin by praising his Lord and extolling Him, then let him send salah upon the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, then let him supplicate afterward with whatever he wishes."

Narrated by Abu Dawud and Al-Tirmidhi, and authenticated by scholars. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said about a man who supplicated without first praising Allah or sending salah upon him: "This man has rushed."
