Ruqyah VersesIslamic Ruqyah Verses Written with Evidence
Praise be to Allah, Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his companions.
The entire Qur’an is healing and mercy for the believers. The Sunnah indicates ruqyah with Al-Fatihah and the Mu'awwidhat, and scholars have given attention to reciting verses that mention tawhid, healing, and the nullification of magic. Specifying some verses does not mean that other verses do not benefit, for the whole Qur’an is goodness, guidance, and healing.
Allah Most High says: “We send down of the Qur’an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it only increases the wrongdoers in loss.” [Al-Isra': 82]
1Surat Al-Fatihah
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of all worlds, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful, Master of the Day of Judgment. You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path, the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who earned anger, nor of those who went astray.
Repeat: recited in ruqyah, and it may be repeated
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, approved ruqyah with Al-Fatihah in the hadith of the person bitten/stung. Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
2Ayat al-Kursi
Allah, there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the Magnificent. [Al-Baqarah: 255]
Repeat: once, and it may be repeated when needed
It is the greatest ayah in the Book of Allah. It contains tawhid, glorification of Allah, and protection.
Evidence: It is established in Sahih Muslim that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked Ubayy ibn Ka'b, may Allah be pleased with him, about the greatest ayah in the Book of Allah. He answered: Ayat al-Kursi, and the Prophet approved him. It is also established in Sahih Al-Bukhari in the story of Abu Hurayrah that whoever recites it before sleep remains under a guardian from Allah, and no devil comes near him until morning.
3The Last Two Ayahs of Surat Al-Baqarah
The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. All believe in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers. We make no distinction between any of His messengers. And they say: We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return. Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. It will have what it earned, and against it what it earned. Our Lord, do not hold us accountable if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, do not place upon us a burden like that which You placed upon those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with what we cannot bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people. [Al-Baqarah: 285-286]
Repeat: once
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever recites the two ayahs from the end of Surat Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.” Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
Scholars explained “they will suffice him” in different ways: some said they suffice him from night prayer, some said from the devil and harms, and the wording is general in sufficiency and good.
4Al-Ikhlas and the Mu'awwidhat
Say: He is Allah, One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, and there is none comparable to Him.
Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak, from the evil of what He created, from the evil of darkness when it settles, from the evil of those who blow into knots, and from the evil of an envier when he envies.
Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the retreating whisperer, who whispers into the breasts of mankind, from among jinn and mankind.
Repeat: three times in self-ruqyah, with light blowing and wiping if easy
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would recite them, blow lightly, and wipe his body with them. Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
Also among the evidence is the hadith of 'A'ishah in Sahih Al-Bukhari that when the Prophet went to bed, he would gather his palms, blow lightly into them, recite Al-Ikhlas and the Mu'awwidhat, then wipe with them as much of his body as he could, doing that three times.
Verses of Healing
5Ayahs That Mention Healing
“Fight them; Allah will punish them by your hands, disgrace them, give you victory over them, and heal the breasts of a believing people.” [At-Tawbah: 14]
“O mankind, there has come to you instruction from your Lord, healing for what is in the breasts, and guidance and mercy for the believers.” [Yunus: 57]
“From their bellies comes a drink of varying colors, in which there is healing for people.” [An-Nahl: 69]
“We send down of the Qur’an that which is healing and mercy for the believers...” [Al-Isra': 82]
“And when I am ill, it is He who cures me.” [Ash-Shu'ara': 80]
“Say: It is, for those who believe, guidance and healing...” [Fussilat: 44]
Repeat: recited when needed with the intention of du'a and healing
Evidence and reference: these are Qur’anic verses that explicitly mention healing, and reciting them falls under the general healing of the Qur’an, as Allah says: {وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ القُرآنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلمُؤْمِنِينَ} [الإسراء: 82]. There is no authentic fixed number from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, for these specific verses, so they are recited as ruqyah and du'a, not as a fixed required wird.
Verses for Nullifying Magic
6Ayahs About Nullifying Magic and Falsehood
“When they threw, Musa said: What you have brought is magic. Indeed, Allah will nullify it. Indeed, Allah does not set right the work of the corrupters. And Allah establishes the truth by His words, even if the criminals dislike it.” [Yunus: 81-82]
“We inspired Musa: Throw your staff, and at once it swallowed what they were falsifying. So the truth was established, and what they were doing was made false...” [Al-A'raf: 117-122]
“Throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow what they have made. What they have made is only the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is.” [Taha: 69]
Repeat: recited when needed without believing in a required fixed number
Evidence and reference: these Qur’anic verses speak about the nullification of the magicians’ magic and the establishment of truth, so scholars mention them in ruqyah when magic is suspected. There is no authentic fixed number from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, for these verses, so they are recited while seeking Allah’s help and asking Him to nullify falsehood, while avoiding obsession and accusing people without evidence.
How to ReciteHow Should These Verses Be Recited in Ruqyah?
- Recite with the intention of du'a and healing.
- Recite with reflection and humility.
- Blow lightly into your palms and wipe what is easy of the body.
- It is permissible to recite directly over the sick person.
- Repeat without obsession and without believing that the number alone is what has an effect.
- Combine ruqyah with adhkar and lawful treatment.
Important NoteImportant Note
It is not permissible to state with certainty that every fatigue, illness, or distress is caused by magic or the evil eye. These verses are recited seeking healing, protection, and the nullification of falsehood by Allah’s permission, while avoiding obsessive thoughts and diagnoses without knowledge.
ClosingClosing Note
The verses of Islamic ruqyah are among the greatest things a Muslim can benefit from because they are the words of Allah, and the Qur’an is healing and mercy. The Muslim should recite what is easy from them with certainty and reliance upon Allah, knowing that healing is from Allah alone and that ruqyah is a blessed means that does not replace repentance, adhkar, and beneficial means.
