The Virtue of Seeking Forgiveness and the Best Forms of Istighfar

Praise be to Allah, Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his companions.

Seeking forgiveness is one of the greatest doors of returning to Allah. It is an act of worship the Muslim needs every day, because the servant is never free from shortcoming, sin, or heedlessness. From Allah’s mercy is that He opened the door of istighfar for His servants and promised them forgiveness, mercy, provision, and relief when they return to Him sincerely.

Allah Most High says: “Whoever does evil or wrongs himself, then seeks Allah’s forgiveness, will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful.” [An-Nisa': 110]
And He says: “Seek forgiveness from your Lord, then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is Merciful and Loving.” [Hud: 90]
Brief Definition

What Does Istighfar Mean?

Istighfar means seeking forgiveness from Allah. Forgiveness includes covering the sin, pardoning it, and protecting the servant from its effect and punishment. Istighfar is not merely words said by the tongue; the foundation is that it is said with presence of heart, regret for the sin, determination to leave it, and good hope in Allah’s mercy.

True Repentance

Is Seeking Forgiveness with the Tongue Enough?

Seeking forgiveness with the tongue is good, but it is more complete and greater in effect when joined with regret, leaving the sin, resolving not to return to it, restoring people’s rights if the sin relates to them, and increasing in righteous deeds.

The Virtue of Istighfar in the Qur’an and Sunnah
Virtue 1

A Cause of Forgiveness and Mercy

Istighfar is a great door to the forgiveness of sins, and Allah loves for His servant to return to Him.

Allah Most High says: {

Virtue 2

A Cause of Provision and Blessing

The Qur’an indicates that istighfar is among the causes of goodness, blessing, and expanded provision, together with faith, righteous action, and taking the proper means.

Nuh, peace be upon him, said to his people: {فَقُلْتُ اسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفَّارًا .

Virtue 3

A Cause for Removing Punishment

Istighfar is a protection for the individual and society from the causes of punishment when it is joined with sincere repentance and returning to Allah.

Allah Most High says: {

Virtue 4

A Quality of the Righteous

The believer may fall into sin, but he does not persist in it. Rather, he remembers Allah, seeks forgiveness, and repents.

Virtue 5

A Deed of the People of the Late Night

The last part of the night before Fajr is one of the noble times for istighfar. It is a time of mercy and response to du'a.

And He says: {وَالمُسْتَغْفِرِينَ بِالأَسْحَارِ} [آل عمران: 17].

Prophetic Guidance

The Prophet’s Frequent Istighfar

Frequent istighfar is not only for someone who has committed an obvious sin. It is a constant act of worship for the believer and a means of increasing nearness to Allah.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “By Allah, I seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him more than seventy times in a day.” Narrated by Al-Bukhari. He also said: “O people, repent to Allah, for I repent to Him one hundred times in a day.” Narrated by Muslim.

The Best Forms of Istighfar
Form 1

Sayyid al-Istighfar

O Allah, You are my Lord. None has the right to be worshipped except You. You created me and I am Your servant. I am upon Your covenant and promise as much as I am able. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessing upon me, and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.
Repeat: once in the morning and once in the evening; it may also be repeated

This form is tremendous because it gathers tawhid, recognition of servitude, acknowledgment of Allah’s blessing, confession of sin, and asking for forgiveness.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, called it the master of istighfar and mentioned its virtue for the one who says it with certainty in the morning or evening. Narrated by Al-Bukhari.

Form 2

I Seek Allah’s Forgiveness and Repent to Him

I seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him.
Repeat: often, with no upper limit

This is an easy wording a Muslim can preserve throughout the day, on the road, after prayer, and in private.

Authentic hadiths establish that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, frequently sought forgiveness and repented to Allah.

Form 3

I Seek Allah’s Forgiveness

I seek Allah’s forgiveness.
Repeat: three times after prayer, and often at any time

Istighfar is prescribed even after an act of worship, because the servant may have fallen into shortcoming or heedlessness during worship.

When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, finished his prayer, he would seek forgiveness three times. Narrated by Muslim.

Form 4

I Seek Forgiveness from Allah the Magnificent

I seek forgiveness from Allah the Magnificent, besides whom none has the right to be worshipped, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, and I repent to Him.
Repeat: said with no fixed number

A Muslim may say it as one of the reported wordings, while not leaving the most established forms, such as Sayyid al-Istighfar.

Narrated by Abu Dawud, Al-Tirmidhi, and Al-Hakim. It was graded authentic or hasan by a number of scholars, while some scholars discussed parts of its chains.

Form 5

My Lord, Forgive Me and Accept My Repentance

My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepter of repentance, the Merciful.
Repeat: often; it is reported that it was counted one hundred times in a sitting

This beneficial wording combines asking for forgiveness and asking Allah, the Accepter of repentance and the Merciful, to accept one’s repentance.

Ibn 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, reported that this was counted from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, one hundred times in a single sitting. Narrated by Abu Dawud, Al-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah; graded authentic or hasan by a number of scholars.

Form 6

O Allah, Forgive My Mistakes and Ignorance

O Allah, forgive my mistakes, my ignorance, my excess in my affairs, and what You know better than me. O Allah, forgive what I did seriously and jokingly, mistakenly and deliberately, and all of that is with me. O Allah, forgive what I have sent ahead and what I have delayed, what I have concealed and what I have made public, and what You know better than me. You are the One who brings forward, You are the One who delays, and You are over all things capable.
Repeat: said with no fixed number

This is among the most comprehensive ways of seeking forgiveness because it includes outward and inward sins, intentional and mistaken actions, and what the servant knows and does not know.

Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Form 7

Glory Be to You, O Allah, Our Lord

Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and with Your praise. O Allah, forgive me.
Repeat: said in bowing and prostration

It combines declaring Allah free of imperfection, praising Him, and asking Him for forgiveness.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, frequently said it in his bowing and prostration after the revelation of Surat An-Nasr. Agreed upon.

Form 8

My Lord, Forgive Me Between the Two Prostrations

My Lord, forgive me. My Lord, forgive me.
Repeat: said between the two prostrations

This reminds the Muslim that seeking forgiveness is present even inside the prayer.

Narrated by Abu Dawud, An-Nasa’i, and Ibn Majah; graded authentic or hasan by a number of scholars.
