The Qur’an: Its Importance and the Virtue of Memorization
The Noble Qur’an is the greatest blessing Allah has bestowed upon His servants. It is the كلام (word) of Allah, revealed as guidance, light, and mercy for all mankind. A Muslim’s connection with the Book of their Lord is not complete except through its recitation, reflection, implementation, and striving to memorize it, due to the great virtue and immense reward found in all of these acts.
The Status of the Qur’an in a Muslim’s Life
Allah the Almighty has clarified the greatness and virtue of the Qur’an in many verses. He says (which translates): “Indeed, this Qur’an guides to that which is most upright.” (Al-Isra - 9)
And He also says: “And We send down of the Qur’an that which is healing and mercy for the believers.” (Al-Isra - 82)
These verses show that the Qur’an is not merely a book to be recited, but a complete guidance in belief, worship, and morals. It is a healing for what is in the hearts of doubts and anxiety, and a mercy granted to those who hold firmly to it.
Allah also commands reflection upon it, saying: “Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’an?” (An-Nisa - 82)
This indicates that its purpose is not recitation alone, but understanding and action.
The Virtue of Memorizing the Qur’an
Memorizing the Qur’an is among the greatest acts of worship and obedience. Allah praises its people, saying: “Rather, it is clear verses in the hearts of those who have been given knowledge.” (Al-Ankabut - 49)
This is evidence of the honor of memorizing the Qur’an in the hearts and that it is a distinguishing feature of this Ummah.
In the Sunnah, the Prophet ﷺ said: “The best of you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.” (Al-Bukhari)
He also said: “It will be said to the companion of the Qur’an: Recite, rise, and recite with measured recitation as you used to recite in the world, for your rank will be at the last verse you recite.” (Abu Dawood, At-Tirmidhi)
He also said: “Indeed, the one who has nothing of the Qur’an within him is like a ruined house.” (At-Tirmidhi)
All of this is a clear encouragement to memorize the Qur’an and to fill the heart with it.
The Methodology of the Early Righteous Generations (Salaf) in Learning and Practice
The early generations did not consider memorizing the Qur’an an end in itself, but rather a means to act upon it and follow its guidance. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) would not move beyond ten verses until they learned what was in them of knowledge and action.
Some of the Salaf said: “We used to learn the Qur’an, knowledge, and action all together.”
The goal is therefore the combination of:
Memorization
Understanding
Action
Whoever memorizes the Qur’an but does not act upon it has missed the greatest objective.
The Impact of Memorizing the Qur’an on a Muslim’s Life
Memorizing the Qur’an has many great effects on a Muslim’s life in this world and the Hereafter, including:
Strengthening the connection with Allah: The memorizer constantly recalls the words of Allah, increasing faith and humility.
Steadfastness in obedience: The verses help one remember Allah’s commands and prohibitions in every situation.
Peace and tranquility of the heart: Allah says, “Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” (Ar-Ra’d - 28)
Elevation in this life and the Hereafter: The Prophet ﷺ said, “Recite and rise…” so one’s rank is raised according to what they memorized and acted upon.
Refinement of behavior and character: The Qur’an guides to noble morals and forbids wrongdoing.
Warning Against Abandoning the Qur’an
Allah warns against abandoning the Qur’an, saying: “And the Messenger will say: ‘O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur’an as [a thing] abandoned.’” (Al-Furqan - 30)
Abandoning the Qur’an is not limited to leaving its recitation, but also includes:
Abandoning reflection upon it
Abandoning acting upon it
Turning away from its rulings
The Noble Qur’an is the life of the hearts and the light of the chest. Memorizing it is a great honor, but it is only complete when combined with action and following its guidance.
The truly successful person is the one who combines memorization, understanding, and practice, following the righteous predecessors among the Companions and those who followed them in goodness, so that the Qur’an becomes either a proof for or against them, and a light in this world and a high rank in the Hereafter.
We ask Allah to make us among the people of the Qur’an—those who are His special people.
