The supplications of the Quran are among the greatest and most comprehensive supplications because they are from the words of Allah the Exalted. They encompass the good of this world and the Hereafter, including guidance, forgiveness, mercy, steadfastness, the soundness of the heart and one’s deeds, and salvation from the Fire. This article gathers a large selection of beneficial Quranic supplications; it is not intended to include every supplication mentioned in the Quran.
The Supplication for Guidance in Surat Al-Fatihah
{اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ المُسْتَقِيمَ . صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ المَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ} [الفاتحة: 6-7].
Meaning: “Guide us to the straight path, the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have earned anger or those who have gone astray.” [Al-Fatihah: 6-7]
This is the greatest thing a servant asks of his Lord in every rak‘ah: guidance to Islam and the Sunnah, steadfastness upon them, and an increase in beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds.
1A Supplication for the Good of This World and the Hereafter
{رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً، وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً، وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ} [البقرة: 201].
Meaning: “Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” [Al-Baqarah: 201]
It is among the most comprehensive supplications, combining well-being in this world and the Hereafter with salvation from the Fire.
2A Supplication for Steadfastness and Guidance
{رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا، وَهَبْ لَنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ رَحْمَةً، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الوَهَّابُ} [آل عمران: 8].
Meaning: “Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from Yourself. Indeed, You are the Bestower.” [Ali ‘Imran: 8]
It asks Allah for steadfastness after guidance, one of the most important things a Muslim needs.
3A Supplication for Forgiveness After Faith
{رَبَّنَا إِنَّنَا آمَنَّا، فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا، وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ} [آل عمران: 16].
Meaning: “Our Lord, we have indeed believed, so forgive us our sins and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” [Ali ‘Imran: 16]
4A Supplication for Patience, Steadfastness, and Victory
{رَبَّنَا أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا، وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا، وَانْصُرْنَا عَلَى القَوْمِ الكَافِرِينَ} [البقرة: 250].
Meaning: “Our Lord, pour patience upon us, make our feet firm, and grant us victory over the disbelieving people.” [Al-Baqarah: 250]
5A Supplication for the Acceptance of Deeds
{رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ السَّمِيعُ العَلِيمُ} [البقرة: 127].
Meaning: “Our Lord, accept this from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.” [Al-Baqarah: 127]
6A Supplication for Submission to Allah and Repentance to Him
{رَبَّنَا وَاجْعَلْنَا مُسْلِمَيْنِ لَكَ وَمِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِنَا أُمَّةً مُسْلِمَةً لَكَ وَأَرِنَا مَنَاسِكَنَا وَتُبْ عَلَيْنَا، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ} [البقرة: 128].
Meaning: “Our Lord, make us both submissive to You and from our descendants a nation submissive to You. Show us our rites and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepter of repentance, the Most Merciful.” [Al-Baqarah: 128]
7A Supplication Not to Be Taken to Account for Forgetfulness or Error
{رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِنْ نَسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا، رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَا إِصْرًا كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِنَا، رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ، وَاعْفُ عَنَّا، وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا، وَارْحَمْنَا، أَنْتَ مَوْلَانَا، فَانْصُرْنَا عَلَى القَوْمِ الكَافِرِينَ} [البقرة: 286].
Meaning: “Our Lord, do not take us to account if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, do not place upon us a burden like the one You placed upon those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with what we cannot bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy upon us. You are our Protector, so grant us victory over the disbelieving people.” [Al-Baqarah: 286]
8A Supplication of Repentance and Admission of Sin
{رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا، وَإِنْ لَمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا، لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الخَاسِرِينَ} [الأعراف: 23].
Meaning: “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.” [Al-A‘raf: 23]
9A Supplication for Mercy and Forgiveness
{رَبَّنَا آمَنَّا، فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا، وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الرَّاحِمِينَ} [المؤمنون: 109].
Meaning: “Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, for You are the best of those who show mercy.” [Al-Mu’minun: 109]
10A Supplication for Righteous Spouses and Children
{رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ، وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا} [الفرقان: 74].
Meaning: “Our Lord, grant us comfort to our eyes from our spouses and descendants, and make us leaders for the righteous.” [Al-Furqan: 74]
11The Supplication of Those of Understanding for Salvation, Forgiveness, and Acceptance
{رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَذَا بَاطِلًا سُبْحَانَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ . رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ مَنْ تُدْخِلِ النَّارَ فَقَدْ أَخْزَيْتَهُ وَمَا لِلظَّالِمِينَ مِنْ أَنْصَارٍ . رَبَّنَا إِنَّنَا سَمِعْنَا مُنَادِيًا يُنَادِي لِلْإِيمَانِ أَنْ آمِنُوا بِرَبِّكُمْ فَآمَنَّا، رَبَّنَا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا، وَكَفِّرْ عَنَّا سَيِّئَاتِنَا، وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ الأَبْرَارِ . رَبَّنَا وَآتِنَا مَا وَعَدْتَنَا عَلَى رُسُلِكَ، وَلَا تُخْزِنَا يَوْمَ القِيَامَةِ، إِنَّكَ لَا تُخْلِفُ المِيعَادَ} [آل عمران: 191-194].
Meaning: “Our Lord, You did not create this without purpose. Glory be to You, so protect us from the punishment of the Fire. Our Lord, whoever You admit into the Fire, You have truly disgraced, and the wrongdoers will have no helpers. Our Lord, we heard a caller calling to faith, saying: Believe in your Lord, so we believed. Our Lord, forgive us our sins, erase our misdeeds, and cause us to die among the righteous. Our Lord, grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You never break Your promise.” [Ali ‘Imran: 191-194]
12The Supplication of Nuh, Peace Be Upon Him
{رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِمَنْ دَخَلَ بَيْتِيَ مُؤْمِنًا وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالمُؤْمِنَاتِ، وَلَا تَزِدِ الظَّالِمِينَ إِلَّا تَبَارًا} [نوح: 28].
Meaning: “My Lord, forgive me, my parents, whoever enters my house as a believer, and all believing men and women. And increase the wrongdoers only in destruction.” [Nuh: 28]
13The Supplication of Musa, Peace Be Upon Him
{رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي . وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي . وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي . يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي} [طه: 25-28].
Meaning: “My Lord, expand my chest for me, make my task easy for me, and loosen the knot from my tongue so that they may understand my speech.” [Ta-Ha: 25-28]
14A Supplication for Knowledge
{رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا} [طه: 114].
Meaning: “My Lord, increase me in knowledge.” [Ta-Ha: 114]
15A Supplication for Gratitude and Righteous Deeds
{رَبِّ أَوْزِعْنِي أَنْ أَشْكُرَ نِعْمَتَكَ الَّتِي أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَى وَالِدَيَّ، وَأَنْ أَعْمَلَ صَالِحًا تَرْضَاهُ، وَأَدْخِلْنِي بِرَحْمَتِكَ فِي عِبَادِكَ الصَّالِحِينَ} [النمل: 19].
Meaning: “My Lord, inspire me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and my parents, and to do righteous deeds that please You. Admit me by Your mercy among Your righteous servants.” [Al-Naml: 19]
16A Supplication for Righteousness in One’s Descendants and Repentance
{رَبِّ أَوْزِعْنِي أَنْ أَشْكُرَ نِعْمَتَكَ الَّتِي أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَى وَالِدَيَّ، وَأَنْ أَعْمَلَ صَالِحًا تَرْضَاهُ، وَأَصْلِحْ لِي فِي ذُرِّيَّتِي، إِنِّي تُبْتُ إِلَيْكَ، وَإِنِّي مِنَ المُسْلِمِينَ} [الأحقاف: 15].
Meaning: “My Lord, inspire me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and my parents, and to do righteous deeds that please You. Make my descendants righteous for me. I have truly repented to You, and I am among those who submit to You.” [Al-Ahqaf: 15]
17A Supplication Seeking Protection From the Fire
{رَبَّنَا اصْرِفْ عَنَّا عَذَابَ جَهَنَّمَ، إِنَّ عَذَابَهَا كَانَ غَرَامًا . إِنَّهَا سَاءَتْ مُسْتَقَرًّا وَمُقَامًا} [الفرقان: 65-66].
Meaning: “Our Lord, turn away from us the punishment of Hell. Its punishment is indeed unrelenting. It is truly an evil place to settle and reside.” [Al-Furqan: 65-66]
18A Supplication for the Forgiveness of Fellow Believers
{رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلِإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالإِيمَانِ، وَلَا تَجْعَلْ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلًّا لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا، رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ رَءُوفٌ رَحِيمٌ} [الحشر: 10].
Meaning: “Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and place no resentment in our hearts toward those who believe. Our Lord, You are truly Most Kind, Most Merciful.” [Al-Hashr: 10]
19A Supplication for Establishing Prayer and Forgiveness for Parents and Believers
{رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي مُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةِ وَمِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِي، رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَاءِ . رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الحِسَابُ} [إبراهيم: 40-41].
Meaning: “My Lord, make me one who establishes prayer, and also from my descendants. Our Lord, accept my supplication. Our Lord, forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day when the reckoning is established.” [Ibrahim: 40-41]
20A Supplication Expressing One’s Need for Allah
{رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنْزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ} [القصص: 24].
Meaning: “My Lord, I am truly in need of whatever good You send down to me.” [Al-Qasas: 24]
21The Supplication of Yunus, Peace Be Upon Him
{لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ، إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ} [الأنبياء: 87].
Meaning: “None has the right to be worshiped except You. Glory be to You. I have indeed been among the wrongdoers.” [Al-Anbiya: 87]
22The Supplication of the Companions of the Cave
{رَبَّنَا آتِنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ رَحْمَةً، وَهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا رَشَدًا} [الكهف: 10].
Meaning: “Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself and provide us with right guidance in our affair.” [Al-Kahf: 10]
23A Supplication Seeking Refuge From the Devils
{رَبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ . وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَنْ يَحْضُرُونِ} [المؤمنون: 97-98].
Meaning: “My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils, and I seek refuge in You, my Lord, from their presence around me.” [Al-Mu’minun: 97-98]
24A Supplication for Patience and Death in Submission to Allah
{رَبَّنَا أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا، وَتَوَفَّنَا مُسْلِمِينَ} [الأعراف: 126].
Meaning: “Our Lord, pour patience upon us and cause us to die as Muslims.” [Al-A‘raf: 126]
25A Supplication for Deliverance From Wrongdoing People
{رَبَّنَا لَا تَجْعَلْنَا فِتْنَةً لِلْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ . وَنَجِّنَا بِرَحْمَتِكَ مِنَ القَوْمِ الكَافِرِينَ} [يونس: 85-86].
Meaning: “Our Lord, do not make us a trial for the wrongdoing people, and save us by Your mercy from the disbelieving people.” [Yunus: 85-86]
26A Supplication Against Being a Trial and for Forgiveness
{رَبَّنَا لَا تَجْعَلْنَا فِتْنَةً لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا، وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا رَبَّنَا، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ العَزِيزُ الحَكِيمُ} [الممتحنة: 5].
Meaning: “Our Lord, do not make us a trial for those who disbelieve, and forgive us, our Lord. Indeed, You are the Almighty, the All-Wise.” [Al-Mumtahanah: 5]
27A Supplication for the Completion of Light and Forgiveness
{رَبَّنَا أَتْمِمْ لَنَا نُورَنَا، وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا، إِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ} [التحريم: 8].
Meaning: “Our Lord, perfect our light for us and forgive us. Indeed, You have power over all things.” [Al-Tahrim: 8]
28The Supplication of Pharaoh’s Wife
{رَبِّ ابْنِ لِي عِنْدَكَ بَيْتًا فِي الجَنَّةِ، وَنَجِّنِي مِنْ فِرْعَوْنَ وَعَمَلِهِ، وَنَجِّنِي مِنَ القَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ} [التحريم: 11].
Meaning: “My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise, save me from Pharaoh and his deeds, and save me from the wrongdoing people.” [Al-Tahrim: 11]
29The Supplication of Zakariyya, Peace Be Upon Him, for Righteous Offspring
{رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً، إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ} [آل عمران: 38].
Meaning: “My Lord, grant me from Yourself righteous offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication.” [Ali ‘Imran: 38]
30The Supplication of Zakariyya, Peace Be Upon Him, Not to Be Left Alone
{رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِي فَرْدًا، وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الوَارِثِينَ} [الأنبياء: 89].
Meaning: “My Lord, do not leave me without an heir, though You are the best of inheritors.” [Al-Anbiya: 89]
31The Supplication of Yusuf, Peace Be Upon Him, for a Good Ending
{رَبِّ قَدْ آتَيْتَنِي مِنَ المُلْكِ، وَعَلَّمْتَنِي مِنْ تَأْوِيلِ الأَحَادِيثِ، فَاطِرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ، أَنْتَ وَلِيِّي فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ، تَوَفَّنِي مُسْلِمًا، وَأَلْحِقْنِي بِالصَّالِحِينَ} [يوسف: 101].
Meaning: “My Lord, You have granted me authority and taught me the interpretation of events. Originator of the heavens and the earth, You are my Protector in this world and the Hereafter. Cause me to die as a Muslim and join me with the righteous.” [Yusuf: 101]
32The Supplication of Ibrahim, Peace Be Upon Him, for Security and Avoidance of Shirk
{رَبِّ اجْعَلْ هَذَا البَلَدَ آمِنًا، وَاجْنُبْنِي وَبَنِيَّ أَنْ نَعْبُدَ الأَصْنَامَ} [إبراهيم: 35].
Meaning: “My Lord, make this city secure and keep me and my children away from worshiping idols.” [Ibrahim: 35]
33The Supplication of Ibrahim, Peace Be Upon Him, for Love of the Sacred House and Provision
{رَبَّنَا إِنِّي أَسْكَنْتُ مِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِي بِوَادٍ غَيْرِ ذِي زَرْعٍ عِنْدَ بَيْتِكَ المُحَرَّمِ، رَبَّنَا لِيُقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ، فَاجْعَلْ أَفْئِدَةً مِنَ النَّاسِ تَهْوِي إِلَيْهِمْ، وَارْزُقْهُمْ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَشْكُرُونَ} [إبراهيم: 37].
Meaning: “Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your Sacred House, our Lord, so that they may establish prayer. Make the hearts of some people incline toward them and provide them with fruits so that they may be grateful.” [Ibrahim: 37]
34The Supplication of Nuh, Peace Be Upon Him, for Victory
{رَبِّ انْصُرْنِي بِمَا كَذَّبُونِ} [المؤمنون: 26].
Meaning: “My Lord, help me because they have denied me.” [Al-Mu’minun: 26]
35The Supplication of Nuh, Peace Be Upon Him, for a Blessed Landing
{رَبِّ أَنْزِلْنِي مُنْزَلًا مُبَارَكًا، وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ المُنْزِلِينَ} [المؤمنون: 29].
Meaning: “My Lord, let me land at a blessed landing, for You are the best of those who provide a place to land.” [Al-Mu’minun: 29]
36The Supplication of Lut, Peace Be Upon Him, for Deliverance From Corruption
{رَبِّ نَجِّنِي وَأَهْلِي مِمَّا يَعْمَلُونَ} [الشعراء: 169].
Meaning: “My Lord, save me and my family from what they do.” [Al-Shu‘ara: 169]
37The Believers’ Supplication of Reliance and Return to Allah
{رَبَّنَا عَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْنَا، وَإِلَيْكَ أَنَبْنَا، وَإِلَيْكَ المَصِيرُ} [الممتحنة: 4].
Meaning: “Our Lord, upon You we rely, to You we turn in repentance, and to You is the final return.” [Al-Mumtahanah: 4]
38A Supplication for Mercy Upon One’s Parents
{رَبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا} [الإسراء: 24].
Meaning: “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small.” [Al-Isra: 24]
39A Supplication for Truthful Entrance and Exit and Supporting Authority From Allah
{رَبِّ أَدْخِلْنِي مُدْخَلَ صِدْقٍ، وَأَخْرِجْنِي مُخْرَجَ صِدْقٍ، وَاجْعَلْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ سُلْطَانًا نَصِيرًا} [الإسراء: 80].
Meaning: “My Lord, cause me to enter with truth and to leave with truth, and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.” [Al-Isra: 80]
40A Supplication Admitting Sin and Seeking Forgiveness
{رَبِّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي} [القصص: 16].
Meaning: “My Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me.” [Al-Qasas: 16]
41A Supplication for Deliverance From Wrongdoing People
{رَبِّ نَجِّنِي مِنَ القَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ} [القصص: 21].
Meaning: “My Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people.” [Al-Qasas: 21]
42A Supplication of Faith and Following the Messenger
{رَبَّنَا آمَنَّا بِمَا أَنْزَلْتَ، وَاتَّبَعْنَا الرَّسُولَ، فَاكْتُبْنَا مَعَ الشَّاهِدِينَ} [آل عمران: 53].
Meaning: “Our Lord, we believe in what You have revealed and we follow the Messenger, so record us among the witnesses.” [Ali ‘Imran: 53]
43A Supplication for Forgiveness and Steadfastness
{رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا، وَإِسْرَافَنَا فِي أَمْرِنَا، وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا، وَانْصُرْنَا عَلَى القَوْمِ الكَافِرِينَ} [آل عمران: 147].
Meaning: “Our Lord, forgive us our sins and our excesses in our affairs, make our feet firm, and grant us victory over the disbelieving people.” [Ali ‘Imran: 147]
44A Concise Supplication for Forgiveness and Mercy
{رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ، وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الرَّاحِمِينَ} [المؤمنون: 118].
Meaning: “My Lord, forgive and have mercy, for You are the best of those who show mercy.” [Al-Mu’minun: 118]
Question and answerMay Quranic Supplications Be Said in Sujood?
Yes. A Muslim may use Quranic supplications in sujood when he intends supplication rather than Quran recitation, because sujood is a place for dua.
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
"أَقْرَبُ مَا يَكُونُ العَبْدُ مِنْ رَبِّهِ وَهُوَ سَاجِدٌ، فَأَكْثِرُوا الدُّعَاءَ".
Meaning: “The closest a servant is to his Lord is while he is prostrating, so increase your supplication.”
Narrated by Muslim.
Reciting the Quran as recitation while bowing or prostrating, however, is not prescribed. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
"أَلَا وَإِنِّي نُهِيتُ أَنْ أَقْرَأَ القُرْآنَ رَاكِعًا أَوْ سَاجِدًا، فَأَمَّا الرُّكُوعُ فَعَظِّمُوا فِيهِ الرَّبَّ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، وَأَمَّا السُّجُودُ فَاجْتَهِدُوا فِي الدُّعَاءِ، فَقَمِنٌ أَنْ يُسْتَجَابَ لَكُمْ".
Meaning: “I have been forbidden to recite the Quran while bowing or prostrating. As for bowing, glorify the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, in it. As for prostration, strive in supplication, for it is fitting that your supplication will be answered.”
Narrated by Muslim.
Therefore, if a Muslim says in sujood, {رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً، وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً، وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ} [البقرة: 201], meaning, “Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire,” or says, {رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الحِسَابُ} [إبراهيم: 41], meaning, “Our Lord, forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day when the reckoning is established,” while intending supplication, there is no harm in that, Allah willing.

"مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمٍ يَدْعُو بِدَعْوَةٍ لَيْسَ فِيهَا إِثْمٌ وَلَا قَطِيعَةُ رَحِمٍ، إِلَّا أَعْطَاهُ اللَّهُ بِهَا إِحْدَى ثَلَاثٍ: إِمَّا أَنْ تُعَجَّلَ لَهُ دَعْوَتُهُ، وَإِمَّا أَنْ يَدَّخِرَهَا لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ، وَإِمَّا أَنْ يَصْرِفَ عَنْهُ مِنَ السُّوءِ مِثْلَهَا". قالوا: إذًا نكثر؟ قال: "اللَّهُ أَكْثَرُ".
Meaning: “No Muslim makes a supplication containing neither sin nor the severing of family ties except that Allah gives him one of three things through it: He either hastens the answer to his supplication, stores it for him in the Hereafter, or averts an equivalent evil from him.” They said, “Then we will supplicate abundantly.” He said, “Allah has even more.”

A Muslim should therefore not be hasty or abandon supplication when his need is delayed. Rather, he should think well of Allah and know that Allah’s choice for him is better.

When reciting the Quran, a Muslim adheres to its exact wording and does not alter it. Meaning: “It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are close relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of the Hellfire.” [Al-Tawbah: 113]

The supplications of the Quran are great and comprehensive, and the authentic supplications established from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, are also revelation and guidance. A Muslim should be diligent in using both. He gives precedence to a transmitted supplication in the particular place for which it was reported, and he may ask for whatever good he wishes in this world and the Hereafter as long as it contains neither sin nor the severing of family ties.
