Prayer and Steadfastness

How Can I Stay Committed to Prayer and Not Leave It?

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and companions.

Some Muslims feel sincere pain because they are not steady in prayer. A person may pray for a few days, then weaken or become busy, and perhaps one missed prayer leads to discouragement and leaving the rest.

The correct path does not begin by waiting for a new feeling. It begins with sincere repentance and a prayer performed now. Prayer is not a reward for someone who has already become righteous; rather, it is one of the greatest means by which the heart and life are rectified.

{اتْلُ مَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ مِنَ الكِتَابِ وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ، إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَى عَنِ الفَحْشَاءِ وَالمُنْكَرِ}Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prevents immorality and wrongdoing. [Al-‘Ankabut 29:45]
Start Now and Know the Status of Prayer
Start

Begin With the Current Prayer Now

If you have been falling short in prayer, do not wait for the start of a week or month, and do not wait until all your problems end or until you leave every sin. Repent to Allah, make wudu, pray the current prayer in its time, then preserve the one after it.

{قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللَّهِ}Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of Allah’s mercy. [Az-Zumar 39:53]

Repentance from falling short in prayer is by regret, leaving abandonment or sinful delay, resolving to preserve it, and sincerely seeking Allah’s help.

Status

Know the Status of Prayer and the Danger of Leaving It

Prayer is the greatest pillar of Islam after the two testimonies, and it is an obligation tied to set times. It may not be taken out of its time without a valid Islamic excuse.

{إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى المُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَوْقُوتًا}Indeed, prayer has been prescribed upon the believers at fixed times. [An-Nisa 4:103]
“Prayer at its proper time.”

The Prophet ﷺ said this when asked which deed is most beloved to Allah. Agreed upon.

“The covenant between us and them is prayer; whoever leaves it has disbelieved.”

Narrated by At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasa’i, Ibn Majah, and Ahmad; authenticated by scholars. Scholars differed regarding the one who leaves prayer out of laziness while affirming its obligation, but they agree that leaving it is among the gravest sins.

Virtue

Preserving Prayer Wipes Away Sins

Alongside the severe warning against leaving prayer, the virtue of preserving it is great. The Prophet ﷺ compared the five prayers to a river at one’s door in which he washes five times every day, then said:

“That is the example of the five prayers; Allah erases sins through them.”

Agreed upon. This refers to Allah’s grace in expiating minor sins; major sins require sincere repentance that fulfills its conditions.

Why Is Consistency Sometimes Difficult?
Diagnosis

Common Causes of Falling Off

  • Delaying prayer after its time enters until one becomes busy or forgets.
  • Staying up late and having irregular sleep, especially affecting Fajr.
  • Getting absorbed in the phone, games, or work.
  • Waiting for khushu‘ or energy before standing to pray.
  • Not knowing how to pray or the meanings of prayer adhkar.
  • Having companions or an environment that does not help with prayer.
  • Despairing after missing one prayer and thinking in an all-or-nothing way.
  • Sins that harden the heart and weaken the will for obedience.
  • Starting with a heavy program of voluntary deeds, then leaving obligations when tired.

Knowing the cause matters because the practical treatment differs from person to person.

Practical Steps to Preserve Prayer
1

Make the Five Prayers the Foundation of Your Day

Do not make prayer a task placed into whatever empty space remains in your day. Build your day around its times. Know the correct prayer times in your city and place them in your schedule before work, study, visits, and errands.

{حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الوُسْطَى}Guard strictly the prayers, especially the middle prayer. [Al-Baqarah 2:238]
2

Pray Early in the Time as Much as You Can

The more you delay prayer without need, the more likely busyness and laziness become. When the time enters, make your default response standing up, not negotiating with yourself for five more minutes that turn into five more.

3

Prepare Before the Adhan

If possible, stay in wudu, prepare your prayer clothes and place, and finish what distracts you before the time enters. Preparation removes many small barriers that laziness uses.

4

Move Away From the Phone When the Time Enters

One of the biggest causes of delay is saying, “I will finish this clip or message,” then minutes pass. Put the phone away, set a clear prayer reminder, and do not dismiss it unless you are getting up for wudu.

5

Preserve Congregational Prayer if It Is Required of You

Congregational prayer is one of the strongest causes of steadiness for able men, because the adhan, iqamah time, walking to the masjid, and righteous company make prayer a fixed part of the day.

Ibn Mas‘ud رضي الله عنه strongly encouraged preserving the prayers where the call is made, as narrated in Sahih Muslim.

6

Fix Your Sleep to Preserve Fajr

  • Sleep at a suitable time after ‘Isha.
  • Set more than one alarm if needed, away from your hand.
  • Ask a trusted person to wake you.
  • Leave the phone before sleep by a suitable amount of time.
  • Remember Allah when you wake and go directly to wudu.
  • Avoid repeatedly pressing snooze.
7

Learn What You Need for Prayer

Some people leave prayer because they are not confident in how to perform it or fear making mistakes. The cure is learning wudu, the prayer, and the essential adhkar from a trustworthy source, not leaving prayer.

Weak khushu‘ does not remove the obligation. Pray and strive against yourself; do not wait for perfect khushu‘ before beginning.

8

Ask Allah for Help

{رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي مُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةِ وَمِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِي، رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَاءِ}My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and from my descendants. Our Lord, accept my supplication. [Ibrahim 14:40]
“O Allah, help me to remember You, thank You, and worship You well.”

Narrated by Abu Dawud and An-Nasa’i; authenticated by scholars.

9

Seek Help Through Good Company and Family

Choose a righteous person to cooperate with in reminding one another of prayer, and connect yourself to the masjid, gatherings of knowledge, and company that help you obey Allah. If you are responsible for a family, wake them gently and be an example before being an instructor.

{وَأْمُرْ أَهْلَكَ بِالصَّلَاةِ وَاصْطَبِرْ عَلَيْهَا}Command your family to pray and patiently persist in it. [Ta-Ha 20:132]
10

Do Not Let One Missed Prayer Become a Reason to Leave the Rest

One of Shaytan’s most dangerous entrances is that a person misses one prayer and says, “I failed,” then leaves the whole day. The correct response is to do what is required, repent from falling short, and preserve the next prayer.

“Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, its expiation is to pray it when he remembers it.”

Narrated by Muslim. Intentionally taking a prayer out of its time is a grave sin that requires sincere repentance.

A Plan From Today and Special Situations
Practical Plan

A Practical Plan to Begin Today

  • Repent to Allah for previous shortcomings.
  • Write down the five prayer times or use a reliable app.
  • Set a reminder for each prayer, and two for Fajr if needed.
  • Decide in advance where you will pray each obligation.
  • Stand when the time enters; do not wait for perfect energy or khushu‘.
  • Make your first priority that no obligatory prayer is missed, then add Sunnah prayers gradually.
  • Review at the end of the day what nearly delayed you and fix it for tomorrow.

Do not begin with one prayer and leave the rest under the claim of gradualism; all five prayers are obligatory. Gradualism belongs in adding voluntary deeds and building supporting habits.

Work and Study

How to Preserve Prayer During Work or Study

  • Know the prayer time before your day starts.
  • Identify a clean and suitable place to pray.
  • Make wudu before a long meeting or class if possible.
  • Arrange your break within the prayer time and ask politely and clearly for a short time to pray.
  • Do not delay it to the end of the time except for need.
  • Learn the rulings you need for travel, sickness, and unusual circumstances from people of knowledge.

The foundation is that work and study are organized around prayer, not that prayer is taken out of its time because of them.

Illness

How Does a Sick Person Pray?

Illness does not mean leaving prayer as long as the mind remains present. A Muslim prays according to his ability.

“Pray standing. If you cannot, then sitting. If you cannot, then on your side.”

Narrated by Al-Bukhari from ‘Imran ibn Husayn رضي الله عنه. Whoever is unable to perform part of the prayer’s posture moves to what he can do and does not leave prayer entirely.

Mistakes

Mistakes That Prevent Steadiness in Prayer

  • Waiting for desire before praying.
  • Intentionally delaying prayer while relying on remembering later.
  • Staying up late every day and using only one Fajr alarm.
  • Remaining on the phone after the adhan.
  • Leaving all prayers because one was missed.
  • Saying: I will commit when I leave the rest of my sins.
  • Starting with a hard voluntary worship program, then dropping obligations.
  • Despairing of Allah’s mercy because shortcomings repeated.
  • Opening the door to waswas and repeating wudu or prayer without certainty.
  • Not treating the real cause of falling off.
Frequently Asked Questions
Question

Should I start with one prayer, then gradually move to five?

No. The five prayers are all obligatory in their times, so it is not permissible to intentionally leave some under the claim of gradualism. Start all of them today, and let gradualism be in Sunnah prayers, voluntary deeds, and supporting habits.

Question

What if I do not feel khushu‘?

Pray and do not leave prayer. Khushu‘ is a great goal, but it does not always come before prayer; it grows through knowledge, calmness, striving, and frequently standing before Allah.

Question

Should I leave prayer because I still fall into sins?

No. You must repent from the sin and preserve prayer together. Do not let Shaytan combine two sins against you: the sin itself and leaving prayer.

Question

What if I missed a prayer because of sleep or forgetfulness?

Pray it as soon as you wake up or remember, and take the means that prevent this from recurring. If someone was negligent, he must also repent and fix the cause.

Question

How do I become steady in Fajr?

Sleep at a suitable time, leave the phone before bed, set enough alarms away from you, ask someone to wake you, remember Allah when you wake, and do not return to bed before making wudu and praying.

Question

May prayer be delayed because of work or school?

It is not permissible to take prayer out of its time merely because of work or study. A Muslim organizes his time and performs it within its time, and benefits from Islamic concessions when their valid causes exist, not merely because of ordinary difficulty.

Question

What should I do about many prayers missed in the past?

Repent to Allah sincerely and begin preserving the current prayer immediately. As for making up prayers intentionally abandoned, there is known detail and scholarly difference, so a Muslim should ask a trustworthy scholar about his situation.

Question

May a woman leave prayer due to tiredness or childcare?

Prayer does not fall due to ordinary tiredness or being busy with children. She prays according to her ability and within the time. During menstruation and postpartum bleeding she does not pray until she becomes pure, and she does not make up the prayers missed during that time.

Question

What if depression or mental illness weakens my prayer routine?

A sick person’s suffering should not be belittled or treated as lack of faith; mental illness can require real treatment and support. Still, prayer does not fall as long as the mind remains present. The Muslim prays according to ability, seeks Allah’s help, and uses trustworthy medical and personal support.

Question

Should I make a vow so I do not leave prayer?

You do not need a vow to preserve prayer; it is already obligatory. It is better to seek Allah’s help, take practical means, repent when you fall short, and avoid adding obligations you may be unable to fulfill.

Question

I committed, then relapsed. Can I start again?

Yes. The door of repentance is open, and you must begin now without surrendering to despair. Learn from the previous attempt, identify the cause that led to falling off, and close that door.

Conclusion

Conclusion

Steadfastness in prayer does not require waiting for an ideal life. It requires sincerity with Allah, standing when the time enters, and patience renewed every day. Preserve all five prayers, organize your sleep and work around them, seek help through the masjid, good company, and family, remove distractions, and do not let one slip become a door to leaving prayer again.
