Love of the Prophet

Love of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم: Its Meaning and Signs

Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.

Love of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم is a great foundation of faith. It is not merely a passing emotion or words said on an occasion. It is a sincere love in the heart whose effects appear in honoring his command, believing his reports, obeying his Sunnah, and giving his guidance priority over desires and customs, while honoring him without exaggeration and following him without innovation.

A Muslim loves the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم because he is the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets, because Allah guided him to Islam through him, because the Quran and Sunnah reached him through him, and because of what he possessed of mercy, truthfulness, trustworthiness, and perfect servitude to Allah.

What Does Love of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم Mean?

Love of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم is the heart’s religious and lawful attachment to him, producing reverence, honor, acceptance of what he brought, following his example, supporting his Sunnah, loving what Allah and His Messenger love, and hating what Allah and His Messenger hate.

True love is not a claim separated from action. Whoever loves someone is eager to know his path and follow him, so how much more when the love is for the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم, whose obedience Allah made part of obedience to Him?

Allah says:

{Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah; but those who turn away, We have not sent you over them as a guardian} [An-Nisa: 80].

And He says:

{And whatever the Messenger has given you, take; and what he has forbidden you, refrain from. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty} [Al-Hashr: 7].

What Is the Ruling on Loving the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم?

What Is the Ruling on Loving the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم?

Loving him صلى الله عليه وسلم is obligatory. The required level of faith is not complete until he is more beloved to the Muslim than his father, his child, himself, and all people, after the love of Allah Most High, which is the foundation of every lawful love and the greatest of them.

Allah says:

{The Prophet is more worthy of the believers than themselves, and his wives are their mothers} [Al-Ahzab: 6].

And He says:

{Say: If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, wealth which you have obtained, commerce wherein you fear decline, and dwellings with which you are pleased are more beloved to you than Allah and His Messenger and striving in His cause, then wait until Allah executes His command. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people} [At-Tawbah: 24].

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all people."

Agreed upon.

Abdullah ibn Hisham رضي الله عنه narrated:

"We were with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم while he was holding the hand of Umar ibn al-Khattab. Umar said to him: O Messenger of Allah, you are dearer to me than everything except myself. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: No, by the One in Whose Hand is my soul, until I am dearer to you than yourself. Umar said: Now, by Allah, you are dearer to me than myself. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Now, O Umar."

Narrated by al-Bukhari.

The meaning of giving his love priority over love of oneself is that the believer gives priority to the command and guidance of the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم when they conflict with the desire and preference of the self. It does not mean that a person does not feel natural love for himself.

Love of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم Is Part of the Sweetness of Faith
Section

Love of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم Is Part of the Sweetness of Faith

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"There are three qualities; whoever has them will taste the sweetness of faith: that Allah and His Messenger are more beloved to him than anything else, that he loves a person only for the sake of Allah, and that he hates to return to disbelief as he hates to be thrown into the Fire."

Agreed upon.

The more a servant grows in knowledge of Allah and His Messenger, and the more truthful he is in following, the more he finds in his heart tranquility of faith and sweetness of obedience according to the sincerity and uprightness he has.

Why Do We Love the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم?

Why Do We Love the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم?

First: Because Allah Chose Him to Guide People

One of the greatest blessings of Allah is that He sent to this Ummah a Messenger who teaches it the Book and wisdom and purifies it.

Allah says:

{Certainly did Allah confer great favor upon the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom, although they had been before in manifest error} [Al Imran: 164].

Every sound knowledge, lawful act of worship, and good that the Ummah came to know reached it, after Allah’s favor, through His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم.

Second: Because of His Mercy and Concern for His Ummah

Allah says:

{There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer; he is concerned over you, and to the believers he is kind and merciful} [At-Tawbah: 128].

He صلى الله عليه وسلم was eager for people’s guidance, merciful to the believers, teaching the ignorant, patiently bearing harm, calling his Ummah to every good, and warning it from every evil.

Third: Because He Conveyed the Message and Fulfilled the Trust

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم conveyed the religion of Allah completely and lived as a caller, teacher, and example until he left the Ummah upon a clear path. He did not conceal anything from revelation, nor did he ask people for any payment for his call.

Allah says:

{O Messenger, convey that which has been revealed to you from your Lord. And if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people. Indeed, Allah does not guide the disbelieving people} [Al-Maidah: 67].

Fourth: Because of the Perfect Character and Servitude Allah Gave Him

Allah says:

{And indeed, you are of a great moral character} [Al-Qalam: 4].

He صلى الله عليه وسلم was the most complete of people in servitude to Allah, the most truthful in speech, the greatest in trustworthiness, and the best in his dealings with his family, his Companions, the weak, and all creation.

What Are the Signs of Loving the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم?
Section

What Are the Signs of Loving the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم?

The First Sign: Following and Obeying Him

The clearest sign of love is following the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in belief, worship, character, and dealings.

Allah says:

{Say: If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Say: Obey Allah and the Messenger. But if they turn away, then indeed, Allah does not like the disbelievers} [Al Imran: 31-32].

Allah made following the Messenger the proof of love, and He made the fruit of that following Allah’s love and forgiveness of sins.

The Second Sign: Giving His Ruling Priority Over Desire and Custom

The truthful lover does not reject the authentic Sunnah because it conflicts with his custom, personal desire, or the opinion of someone he venerates. Rather, he submits to Allah and His Messenger while seeking understanding and knowledge.

Allah says:

{It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error} [Al-Ahzab: 36].

And He says:

{But no, by your Lord, they will not truly believe until they make you judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in full submission} [An-Nisa: 65].

This does not mean that every juristic disagreement is caused by weak love. Scholars may differ over whether a hadith is authentic or over its meaning. The duty of the non-specialist is to ask trustworthy people of knowledge and not make his desire the judge over the texts.

The Third Sign: Holding Firm to His Sunnah and Avoiding Innovation

Al-Irbad ibn Sariyah رضي الله عنه narrated:

"The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم gave us an admonition by which hearts trembled and eyes shed tears. We said: O Messenger of Allah, it is as if it is a farewell admonition, so advise us. He said: I advise you to fear Allah, and to hear and obey, even if an Abyssinian slave is appointed over you. Whoever lives among you after me will see much disagreement, so hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs after me. Hold firmly to it and bite onto it with your molar teeth. Beware of newly introduced matters, for every newly introduced matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance."

Narrated by Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi, and authenticated by scholars.

A Muslim does not seek nearness to Allah through an invented act of worship while thinking it expresses love, because the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم showed his Ummah the doors of good, and truthful love stops where his guidance stops.

The Fourth Sign: Honoring and Revering Him Without Exaggeration

Part of his right صلى الله عليه وسلم is to honor him, show proper etiquette when mentioning him, avoid mocking anything from his Sunnah, and send salah and salam upon him. But lawful reverence does not raise him above the station of servitude and messengership, nor does it direct to him anything from the rights of Allah or worship.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians exaggerated in praising the son of Mary. I am only His slave, so say: the slave of Allah and His Messenger."

Narrated by al-Bukhari.

He صلى الله عليه وسلم is the master of the children of Adam and the best of mankind. He said:

"I will be the master of the children of Adam on the Day of Resurrection, the first for whom the grave will be opened, the first intercessor, and the first whose intercession will be accepted."

Narrated by Muslim.

At the same time, he is the slave of Allah and His Messenger. He is not worshiped or invoked besides Allah, nothing from knowledge of the unseen is attributed to him except what Allah informed him of, and nothing from the exclusive qualities of lordship or control over the universe belongs to him.

Allah says:

{Say: I do not possess for myself any benefit or harm except what Allah wills. And if I knew the unseen, I would have acquired much good, and no harm would have touched me. I am only a warner and a bringer of good tidings to a people who believe} [Al-Araf: 188].

The Fifth Sign: Loving His Companions, His Family, and His Wives in Truth

Part of loving the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم is loving his Companions who believed in him, supported him, and transmitted his Sunnah, and loving the believing members of his family and his wives, the Mothers of the Believers, while preserving everyone’s rights without exaggeration or harshness.

Part of loving him صلى الله عليه وسلم is honoring all his wives رضي الله عنهن, protecting their honor, and refraining from insulting them, belittling them, or speaking about them without right, for Allah named them the Mothers of the Believers. Attacking any one of them is an offense against the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and contradicts the love and reverence due to him and to his household.

The Mother of the Believers Aishah رضي الله عنها has a great status, and Allah revealed her innocence from the slander in Quran that is recited. He says:

{Indeed, those who came with falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather, it is good for you. For every person among them is what punishment he has earned, and the one who took upon himself the greater portion thereof will have a great punishment} [An-Nur: 11].

And He says:

{Evil women are for evil men, and evil men are for evil women; and good women are for good men, and good men are for good women. Those are declared innocent of what they say. For them is forgiveness and noble provision} [An-Nur: 26].

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"Many men attained perfection, but among women none attained perfection except Maryam bint Imran and Asiyah, the wife of Pharaoh. And the superiority of Aishah over other women is like the superiority of tharid over all other food."

Agreed upon.

Speaking ill of the Mothers of the Believers, insulting them, or belittling them is a grave evil and an offense against the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. It is not a light matter or merely a small deficiency in love. As for accusing the Mother of the Believers Aishah رضي الله عنها of the immorality from which Allah declared her innocent, that is disbelief, because it denies the clear text of the Quran, and more than one scholar has reported consensus on that. As for applying the ruling of disbelief to a specific person, it requires fulfilling the conditions and removing the impediments, and it is referred to scholars and lawful Islamic authority, not ordinary people. The Muslim must defend the Mothers of the Believers and clarify their virtue and innocence with lawful evidence, while remaining within justice and the limits of the Shariah; he does not answer one evil with another, nor support the truth by disobeying Allah.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"Do not abuse my Companions, for if one of you were to spend the equivalent of Uhud in gold, it would not reach the mudd of one of them, nor even half of it."

Agreed upon.

Supporting the family of the Prophet is not done by attacking the Companions of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, just as loving the Companions is not done by being harsh toward the family of the Prophet. Rather, Ahl as-Sunnah love them all and give each one his due right.

The Sixth Sign: Sending Salah and Salam Upon Him Often

Allah commanded the believers to send salah and salam upon him, saying:

{Indeed, Allah and His angels send salah upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send salah upon him and greet him with salam} [Al-Ahzab: 56].

Sending salah upon him is one of the greatest acts of worship and one of the signs of honoring him, especially when he is mentioned and in the established occasions. For more detail, see: The Virtue of Sending Salah upon the Prophet.

The Seventh Sign: Learning His Seerah and Authentic Sunnah

Love is not complete while the beloved is unknown. Whoever wants his love for the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم to increase should learn his Seerah from reliable sources, read his authentic hadiths, and reflect on his worship, mercy, patience, courage, justice, and dealings with his family and Companions.

The intended learning is not merely collecting emotional stories, but knowing his guidance in order to act upon it, while verifying narrations and not spreading weak or fabricated hadiths under the excuse of loving him.

The Eighth Sign: Following His Character and Worship

Allah says:

{There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often} [Al-Ahzab: 21].

So the Muslim follows him in his truthfulness, trustworthiness, mercy, humility, and patience, and in his prayer, remembrance, and the rights of his family, neighbors, and people. It is not sound to care for some outward appearances while neglecting obligations or wronging creation, for his guidance صلى الله عليه وسلم includes the outward and the inward.

The Ninth Sign: Supporting His Sunnah With Wisdom and Justice

Supporting the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم after his death is by believing in him, learning and teaching his Sunnah, responding to lies and doubts with knowledge and justice, and calling to his guidance with wisdom, not with oppression, insults, or forbidden aggression.

Part of his Sunnah صلى الله عليه وسلم is gentleness and justice, and the Sunnah is not supported through a way that contradicts the Sunnah.

The Tenth Sign: Longing to Meet Him and Hoping for His Company in the Hereafter

Among the signs of love is that the believer longs to see the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and meet him, and hopes for his companionship in Paradise, along with truthful following and righteous action.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"Among those of my Ummah who love me most intensely are people who will come after me; one of them would wish to see me even at the cost of his family and wealth."

Narrated by Muslim.

This longing is a praiseworthy meaning of faith, but it is not measured merely by tears or dreams. Rather, it is proven by eagerness to obey him, follow him, and prepare to meet him upon Islam and the Sunnah.

Does Sin Mean That a Person Does Not Love the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم?
Section

Does Sin Mean That a Person Does Not Love the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم?

Sin contradicts and weakens the completeness of the required love according to its level, but it does not by itself prove that the foundation of love has vanished from the heart of every sinner. A Muslim may have the foundation of love while weakness overcomes him and he falls into sin. He must repent, strive against himself, and not use love as an excuse to continue in disobedience.

Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه narrated:

"A man during the time of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was named Abdullah and was nicknamed Himar, and he used to make the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم laugh. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم had punished him for drinking. One day he was brought and the Prophet ordered that he be punished. A man among the people said: O Allah, curse him! How often he is brought! The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Do not curse him, for by Allah, I know that he loves Allah and His Messenger."

Narrated by al-Bukhari.

The hadith does not make sin light, for the legal punishment prescribed by Allah was carried out on the man. But it prevents hastiness in denying faith and love from a sinful Muslim, and it calls people to help him repent instead of pushing him into despair.

Mistakes That Contradict Complete Love or Corrupt Its Meaning
Section

Mistakes That Contradict Complete Love or Corrupt Its Meaning

  1. Being satisfied with praises and slogans while leaving obligations or opposing the Sunnah.
  2. Exaggerating regarding him صلى الله عليه وسلم by invoking him or seeking his help in matters only Allah can do.
  3. Inventing an act of worship or religious celebration and then making participation in it the sole measure of love.
  4. Spreading unauthentic hadiths and stories for emotional effect.
  5. Reducing following him to some outward appearances while neglecting truthfulness, justice, mercy, and people’s rights.
  6. Attacking his Companions, wives, or family, or exaggerating regarding some of them at the expense of others.
  7. Defending him with oppression, obscene speech, or aggression; a noble goal does not permit a forbidden means.
  8. Despairing of increasing in love, for love increases through knowledge and obedience and decreases through heedlessness and sin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Question

Is loving the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم obligatory?

Yes. It is one of the obligations of faith, and the required faith of a servant is not complete until the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم is more beloved to him than his father, his child, himself, and all people. Its truthfulness appears in following, obedience, and reverence.

Question

Must I love the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم more than myself?

Yes, as shown in the hadith of Umar رضي الله عنه. Its meaning is that the Muslim gives priority to the ruling and obedience of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم over the desire of his own self, and that he accepts his guidance even when it conflicts with what the self wants.

Question

Does the hadith mean that love of the Prophet is like love of Allah?

No. Love of Allah is the greatest love and the foundation of worship, and no one is equal to Him in it. Love of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم is a lawful love that follows from love of Allah; we love him because Allah loved him, chose him, and commanded us to follow him. Mentioning Allah and His Messenger together in some texts does not mean equality between the Creator and the created.

Question

Is it enough to say that I love the Prophet without following him?

A claim alone is not enough. The foundation of love is in the heart, and the proof of its truthfulness is following the Sunnah, fulfilling the obligations, and avoiding what he forbade. A lover may fall short or sin, but he does not make his shortcoming a path, nor does he refuse to return to the truth.

Question

Does every sinner not love the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم?

No. We do not rule that every sinner has lost love. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم affirmed love for the man who repeatedly drank alcohol, while still condemning his sin and carrying out the punishment on him. But sins weaken the completeness of love, and the duty is repentance and not being deceived by mere claims.

Question

Is seeing the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in a dream a condition for truthful love?

No. Seeing the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in a dream is not a condition for faith, love, or sainthood, and not seeing him does not indicate a specific deficiency in a Muslim’s religion.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"Whoever sees me in a dream has truly seen me, for Shaytan cannot imitate me."

Agreed upon.

It is not correct to state with certainty that the one seen in a dream is the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم unless his description matches what is authentically reported in the Sunnah about his description. Shaytan cannot take his true form, but he may come in another form and claim what is not his.

A righteous dream is a glad tiding, but it does not establish a legal ruling, make the forbidden lawful or an innovation into a Sunnah, nor is what a sleeping person sees given priority over the Quran and authentic Sunnah.

Question

Is celebrating the Mawlid the measure of loving the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم?

No. The measure of love that came in the Quran is following the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. Neither the Prophet nor his Companions took the day of his birth as an annual religious celebration, even though they were the strongest of the Ummah in love for him and the most knowledgeable of his right. Acts of worship are built upon evidence, so an act he did not legislate should not be made a measure of people’s love or hatred.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"Whoever introduces into this matter of ours that which is not from it, it is rejected."

Agreed upon.

This issue, with its evidence and details, will be explained in a separate article.

Question

Is sending salah upon the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم one of the signs of loving him?

Yes. It is one of his rights and one of the signs of honoring him, and Allah commanded it. But love is not reduced to it alone; rather, it combines sending salah and salam upon him, believing his reports, obeying his commands, avoiding his prohibitions, and following his Sunnah.

Question

Does attacking the Mothers of the Believers contradict love of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم?

Yes. Insulting the wives of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم or belittling them is forbidden, a grave evil, and an offense against him. They are the Mothers of the Believers, and part of honoring him is protecting their honor and knowing their virtue. This ruling includes all his wives رضي الله عنهن.

The matter is even more severe regarding the Mother of the Believers Aishah رضي الله عنها. Whoever accuses her of the immorality from which Allah declared her innocent in Surat an-Nur has denied the clear text of the Quran, and for that reason scholars ruled such a person to be a disbeliever and more than one of them reported consensus on it. This is a general ruling; as for ruling on a specific person, conditions and impediments must be considered and the matter is referred to people of knowledge and lawful Islamic authority. Individuals may not attack anyone or treat his blood or wealth as lawful.

Question

Is it permissible to invoke the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم or ask him for needs after his death?

No. Loving and honoring him do not permit directing supplication to him, for supplication is worship for Allah alone. During his life, the Companions would ask him to supplicate to Allah for them in matters he was able to do. After his death, the Muslim calls upon his Lord directly, sends salah and salam upon his Prophet according to the Sunnah, and does not call upon him to remove distress, heal sickness, or forgive sin.

Allah says:

{And the mosques are for Allah, so do not invoke anyone along with Allah} [Al-Jinn: 18].

Question

How do I know whether an action agrees with the Sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم?

One returns to the Quran and authentic hadith, with the understanding of the Companions رضي الله عنهم and the explanation of recognized scholars, while verifying the authenticity of the hadith and the correctness of its meaning. Acts of worship are not based merely on popularity, emotion, visions, or dreams.

Question

Does love of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم benefit a person who has little action?

Truthful love is one of the greatest causes of good. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said to the man who mentioned that he loved Allah and His Messenger:

"You will be with those whom you love."

Agreed upon.

The Companions رضي الله عنهم rejoiced greatly at this hadith. But it is not an invitation to abandon action. The truthful lover strives to follow the one he loves, hopes for Allah’s mercy, and does not rely on claims while persisting in opposition.

Conclusion
Conclusion

Conclusion

So love of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم is a truthful love that combines revering him and following his Sunnah, without harsh neglect or exaggeration. The more a Muslim increases in knowledge of his guidance and action upon his Sunnah, the more his love for him increases and the more its effect appears in his worship, character, and life. We ask Allah to grant us truthful love for him, excellent following of his Sunnah, and to gather us in his company. And Allah knows best. May Allah send peace and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
