Voluntary PrayerDuha Prayer: Its Time, Number of Rak'ahs, and How to Pray It
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all worlds. May Allah's peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his Companions.
Duha prayer is an easy act of worship with immense virtue. Its time begins after the sun has risen above the horizon. A Muslim can pray two rak'ahs before beginning work or add more if time allows. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, advised some of his Companions to pray it, performed it himself, and explained its virtue and best time.
People often ask whether it begins at the exact moment of sunrise, whether Ishraq is a different prayer, whether eight rak'ahs is its maximum, and whether it has specific surahs or a particular dua. This article explains the established rulings with their evidence, without unnecessary complication or restricting worship with practices that have not been established.
Ruling and Virtue
An Emphasized Sunnah, Not an Obligation
Duha prayer is an emphasized and recommended Sunnah, not an obligatory prayer. A person who maintains it is rewarded. A person who leaves it does not sin but misses a great virtue.
Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
«أَوْصَانِي خَلِيلِي صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِثَلَاثٍ: صِيَامِ ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ، وَرَكْعَتَيِ الضُّحَى، وَأَنْ أُوتِرَ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَنَامَ».“My close friend, peace and blessings be upon him, advised me to do three things: fast three days of every month, pray two rak'ahs of Duha, and pray Witr before I sleep.”
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
This advice demonstrates how strongly its observance is recommended. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is also authentically reported to have performed it in different numbers of rak'ahs, so both his words and actions establish it.
Two Rak'ahs Fulfill the Charity Due for the Joints
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
«يُصْبِحُ عَلَى كُلِّ سُلَامَى مِنْ أَحَدِكُمْ صَدَقَةٌ؛ فَكُلُّ تَسْبِيحَةٍ صَدَقَةٌ، وَكُلُّ تَحْمِيدَةٍ صَدَقَةٌ، وَكُلُّ تَهْلِيلَةٍ صَدَقَةٌ، وَكُلُّ تَكْبِيرَةٍ صَدَقَةٌ، وَأَمْرٌ بِالمَعْرُوفِ صَدَقَةٌ، وَنَهْيٌ عَنِ المُنْكَرِ صَدَقَةٌ، وَيُجْزِئُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ رَكْعَتَانِ يَرْكَعُهُمَا مِنَ الضُّحَى».“Every morning, charity is due from every joint of each of you. Every tasbih is charity, every tahmid is charity, every tahlil is charity, every takbir is charity, commanding what is right is charity, and forbidding what is wrong is charity. Two rak'ahs prayed in the forenoon suffice for all of that.”
Narrated by Muslim.
The Arabic word sulama means a joint. Every morning, Allah blesses the servant with physical wellbeing and movement, and it is prescribed to show gratitude through different acts of obedience. Two rak'ahs of Duha fulfill the daily charity described for the body's joints.
The hadith does not mean that these two rak'ahs replace obligatory zakah or people's rights. It refers specifically to the daily charity of gratitude mentioned in the hadith.
The Time of Duha Prayer
When Does Its Time Begin?
Its time begins after sunrise once the sun has risen approximately the height of a spear above the horizon. It does not begin at the moment the disc of the sun first appears because sunrise is one of the prohibited times for prayer.
In practical terms, this is approximately fifteen minutes after the published sunrise time. This is a cautious estimate that varies slightly with location, season, and the calendar's calculation method; it is not a fixed number established by the Shariah.
For example, if the local sunrise time is 7:00 a.m., one should not pray Duha at exactly 7:00. Wait until the sun has risen and the prohibited period has ended.
When Does Its Time End?
The time for Duha ends shortly before the sun reaches its zenith, meaning before Dhuhr begins. When the sun is directly overhead, there is a brief prohibited period until it begins to decline and Dhuhr enters.
As a practical precaution, do not delay it until the final minutes before the Dhuhr adhan. Finish approximately ten minutes or more beforehand, depending on the calendar's accuracy. Once Dhuhr begins, the time for Duha has ended and the time for the Sunnah prayer before Dhuhr has begun.
Its time is therefore broad: from after the sun has risen until shortly before the zenith. It is not confined to a particular hour displayed on a phone.
What Is the Best Time for Duha?
Zayd ibn Arqam, may Allah be pleased with him, saw people praying Duha early in its time. He said that they knew praying at another time was better, and then reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
«صَلَاةُ الأَوَّابِينَ حِينَ تَرْمَضُ الفِصَالُ».“The prayer of those who repeatedly return to Allah is when the young camels feel the heat of the sand.”
Narrated by Muslim.
An awwab is a person who repeatedly returns to Allah. Fisal are young camels, and the expression describes the time when the sand becomes hot as the sun grows stronger. The hadith explains the virtue of Duha and shows that praying it later in the forenoon is better than praying it at the beginning, although its entire time is valid.
It may be prayed at any point during its time, but the best time is when the morning has advanced and the heat has strengthened. This is usually during the later part of the forenoon, some time before Dhuhr. A Muslim does not have to wait for the best time if there is concern about becoming busy or forgetting. Praying it early, after the sun has properly risen, is better than missing it.
Is Ishraq a Different Prayer from Duha?
Ishraq is Duha prayer when it is performed at the beginning of its time after the sun has risen. They are not two independent prayers with separate numbers and forms.
A person who remains seated after Fajr remembering Allah and then prays two rak'ahs after the sun has risen has prayed Duha at its earliest time; some scholars call this Ishraq prayer. A person who prays in the middle or later part of the forenoon has likewise prayed Duha. Its best time is the time described in the hadith about the prayer of the awwabin.
Number of Rak'ahs and Method
How Many Rak'ahs Is Duha Prayer?
The minimum is two rak'ahs. This is established by the Prophet's advice to Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, and by the hadith about charity for the joints of the body.
A Muslim may pray four, six, eight, or more according to energy and available time. Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said:
«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي الضُّحَى أَرْبَعًا، وَيَزِيدُ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ».“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to pray four rak'ahs of Duha and add as much as Allah willed.”
Narrated by Muslim.
It is also established from Umm Hani, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed eight rak'ahs during the forenoon on the day of the conquest of Makkah. This is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim, and some narrations mention that he concluded with salam after every two rak'ahs.
The stronger view is that no authentic evidence limits the maximum number to eight. Eight is an established number from the Prophet's practice, peace and blessings be upon him, but it is not a maximum that prohibits adding more. Whoever wishes to maintain the most certain minimum may pray two rak'ahs, and whoever adds more has done well.

How to Pray Duha Step by Step
Duha is prayed like other voluntary prayers:
1Perform purification, face the qiblah, and cover the awrah.
2Intend Duha prayer in the heart. Do not pronounce the intention, because verbalizing it is not established from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
3Say the opening takbir, recite al-Fatihah, and then recite whatever is easy from the Quran.
4Complete the bowing, prostration, and calmness as in every other prayer.
5Recite the tashahhud after the second rak'ah and then conclude with salam.
6If you wish to add more, pray another two rak'ahs and continue in pairs, concluding each pair with salam.
Duha has no adhan or iqamah. The basic practice is to pray it individually; it should not be made into a regularly scheduled congregation or permanent group appointment.
Anyone who needs to review the prayer's form and pillars can consult How to Pray Salah Correctly Step by Step.
What Should Be Recited? Is There a Specific Dua?
Recite Surah al-Fatihah in every rak'ah, followed by whatever is easy from the Quran. No particular surah is authentically established as one that must or should always be recited in Duha. One may recite al-Shams, al-Duha, al-Ikhlas, or any other surah without believing in a special virtue unsupported by evidence.
There is also no established specific dua to be said after Duha. A Muslim may ask Allah for any good of this world and the Hereafter without attributing a particular formula to the Sunnah or treating it as a daily component of the prayer.
Where May Duha Be Prayed?
It may be prayed at home, in the masjid, or at work if the place is clean and the prayer can be performed with humility. In principle, voluntary prayers are best performed at home because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
«فَإِنَّ أَفْضَلَ صَلَاةِ المَرْءِ فِي بَيْتِهِ إِلَّا الصَّلَاةَ المَكْتُوبَةَ».“The best prayer of a person is in the home, except for the obligatory prayer.”
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
There is no problem with praying it in the masjid for someone who remains there after Fajr or finds that being in the masjid helps with performing it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Question and AnswerMust Duha Be Maintained Every Day?
It is not obligatory, but maintaining it is a righteous deed, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, recommended it. Missing it on a particular day is not sinful. A person should not abandon it entirely because of being unable to pray many rak'ahs; two rak'ahs fulfill the foundation of the Sunnah.
Question and AnswerMay Duha Be Prayed While Traveling?
Yes. Duha is prescribed both while traveling and while at home. A traveler who can conveniently perform it may do so.
Question and AnswerIs Duha Different for Women?
No. A woman prays Duha in sets of two rak'ahs during its time, recites whatever is easy, and observes the established rulings of purification and prayer.
Question and AnswerMay I Pray It Before Going to Work?
Yes, if its time has begun after the sun has risen. If work begins before the time enters, Duha may not be prayed early. If possible, it can be performed later in a clean place during a break while its time remains.
Question and AnswerDoes Duha Replace Fajr Prayer?
No. Fajr is obligatory and Duha is voluntary; a voluntary prayer cannot replace an obligatory one. A person who misses Fajr because of sleep or forgetfulness prays it upon waking or remembering and does not suffice with the two rak'ahs of Duha.
Question and AnswerIs Duha One of the Rawatib Sunnah Prayers?
Duha is not one of the regular Sunnah prayers attached to the five obligatory prayers. It is an independent voluntary prayer with its own time. Learn about those prayers and their times in Rawatib Sunnah Prayers and Witr.
Common Mistakes
Mistakes to Avoid
1Praying at the exact moment of sunrise before the sun has risen and the prohibited time has ended.
2Believing that Ishraq is independent from Duha and has a separate form.
3Believing that eight rak'ahs is a maximum that may not be exceeded.
4Consistently assigning a particular surah to each rak'ah and attributing that practice to the Sunnah without authentic evidence.
5Circulating a specific dua after Duha while believing it is an established Sunnah.
6Pronouncing the intention before prayer.
7Abandoning Duha completely because one cannot pray four or eight rak'ahs, even though its minimum is two.
8Delaying it until the prohibited time immediately before Dhuhr begins.
9Making it into a regular daily congregation as though it were an obligatory prayer.

An Easy SunnahTwo Rak'ahs with Humility
Duha prayer does not require complicated arrangements. Wait until the sun has risen, then pray two rak'ahs with humility and add more if desired. If you can perform it at the best time, do so; if you fear becoming occupied, pray it near the beginning of its valid time.
The purpose is to draw near to Allah through an established Sunnah, without exaggeration or restricting it with practices Allah did not legislate.
And Allah knows best. May Allah's peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his Companions.
