Steadfastness After Worship

How Can a Muslim Remain Steadfast After Blessed Seasons?

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and companions.

Blessed seasons are from Allah’s mercy to His servants. In them, He opens doors of good, multiplies rewards, and helps people repent, remember Him, pray, fast, and give charity. But the lesson is not only that a Muslim becomes active during the season and then returns to heedlessness afterward. One sign of benefiting from worship is that it leaves an effect after it: preserving prayer, staying away from sin, continuing dhikr, desiring good, and fearing shortcomings.

Worship your Lord until certainty comes to you. [Al-Hijr 15:99]
{فَاسْتَقِمْ كَمَا أُمِرْتَ وَمَنْ تَابَ مَعَكَ وَلَا تَطْغَوْا إِنَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ}Remain upright as you have been commanded, and those who repent with you, and do not transgress. Indeed, He sees what you do. [Hud 11:112]
Say: I believe in Allah, then remain upright.

Narrated by Muslim.

The believer asks Allah for acceptance, strives for steadfastness, and knows that the Lord of Ramadan is the Lord of all months, and the Lord of the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah is the Lord of the whole year.

Foundations of Steadfastness After Blessed Seasons
Acceptance

1. Ask Allah for Acceptance and Do Not Be Amazed by Your Deeds

One of the greatest ways to preserve the effect of a blessed season is to ask Allah to accept your deeds and not become impressed with yourself or your worship. A deed only benefits if Allah accepts it, and no matter how much the servant strives, he remains in need of his Lord’s mercy and favor.

Our Lord, accept from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. [Al-Baqarah 2:127]
أُولَئِكَ يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الخَيْرَاتِ وَهُمْ لَهَا سَابِقُونَ}Those who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will return to their Lord; they hasten to good deeds. [Al-Mu'minun 23:60-61]

The believer combines good thoughts of Allah with fear of his own shortcomings. He does not despair of Allah’s mercy, feel safe from accountability, or see himself as superior to others.

Obligations

2. Preserve the Obligations First

The greatest way to preserve obedience after blessed seasons is to guard the obligatory deeds, especially prayer. Some people become active in voluntary deeds during Ramadan or Dhul-Hijjah, then weaken afterward in prayer or delay it, and this is a great loss.

Maintain the prayers and the middle prayer, and stand before Allah devoutly. [Al-Baqarah 2:238]
Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers at fixed times. [An-Nisa 4:103]

Let the Muslim’s decision after every season be: I will not neglect prayer, delay it without excuse, or put trade, study, habits, or entertainment before it.

Consistency

3. Continue with a Little and Do Not Stop

What is required after a blessed season is not that a Muslim burdens himself with a program he cannot bear and then abandons it completely. Rather, the Sunnah is to stay firm upon a regular righteous deed, even if it is small.

The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if they are few.

Agreed upon.

Religion is easy, and no one makes the religion harsh except that it overwhelms him. So be moderate, draw near, and receive glad tidings.

Narrated by Al-Bukhari.

  • Praying on time.
  • Reading some Qur'an every day, even one page or half a page.
  • Morning and evening adhkar.
  • Istighfar and sending salah upon the Prophet ﷺ.
  • A small weekly or monthly charity.
  • Fasting three days each month when possible.
  • Duha prayer or Witr for whoever is able.
Repentance

4. Repent Quickly If You Weaken or Fall into Sin

One of the most dangerous things after blessed seasons is for a Muslim to think that falling into a sin after obedience means he has lost everything, so he gives up. This is one of Shaytan’s entrances. The obligation is to rush to repentance and not allow one sin to become the beginning of a long fall.

Repent to Allah all together, O believers, so that you may succeed. [An-Nur 24:31]
{قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا}Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of Allah’s mercy. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. [Az-Zumar 39:53]
Fear Allah wherever you are, follow a bad deed with a good deed and it will erase it, and deal with people with good character.

Narrated by At-Tirmidhi; graded hasan by a number of scholars.

Means

5. Preserve the Causes of Obedience and Avoid the Causes of Regression

Steadfastness after blessed seasons requires preserving the means. Whoever knows that certain gatherings, apps, relationships, or habits weaken his heart should beware of them and not open the doors of temptation upon himself.

O you who believe, fear Allah and be with the truthful. [At-Tawbah 9:119]
{وَاصْبِرْ نَفْسَكَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالغَدَاةِ وَالعَشِيِّ يُرِيدُونَ وَجْهَهُ}Keep yourself patient with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face. [Al-Kahf 18:28]
  • Righteous company that reminds you of Allah.
  • Reducing what opens the door to heedlessness and sin.
  • Organizing sleep and waking times.
  • Attending a lesson or reading beneficial knowledge.
  • Making the home an environment of dhikr, prayer, and Qur'an.
  • Avoiding long isolation that opens doors to whispers and desires.
  • Remembering Allah privately before publicly.
All Year

6. Do Not Worship Allah Only in Seasons

Blessed seasons awaken the heart, but they are not a replacement for uprightness in all of life. Whoever worshiped Allah in Ramadan should know that Allah is worshiped in Shawwal and every other month. Whoever strove in Dhul-Hijjah should carry its effect afterward.

Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him. [An-Nisa 4:36]
{يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنْتُمْ مُسْلِمُونَ}O you who believe, fear Allah as He should be feared, and do not die except as Muslims. [Aal Imran 3:102]

The servant does not know when death will come. A wise person makes blessed seasons stations of strength, not temporary moments that end when the time ends.

A Practical Program After the Season
Daily

A Brief Daily Program

  • Pray on time.
  • Morning and evening adhkar.
  • A fixed Qur'an portion, even if small.
  • Istighfar and sending salah upon the Prophet ﷺ.
  • Leave one sin that weakens the heart.
Weekly

A Brief Weekly Program

  • Give charity, even a little.
  • Maintain family ties or call a parent or relative.
  • Attend a gathering of knowledge or listen to a reliable lesson.
  • Review yourself: what improved, and what still needs repentance?
Monthly

A Brief Monthly Program

  • Fast three days of the month if possible.
  • Review your Qur'an and dhikr routine.
  • Hold yourself accountable regarding prayer, rights, and sins.
  • Renew your intention and resolve to remain upright.

The goal is for the plan to be possible, not idealistic beyond one’s ability, so it can continue and Allah can place blessing in it.

Dua for Firmness

8. Make Much Dua for Steadfastness

The heart is in Allah’s hand, and steadfastness is a blessing not obtained merely by personal strength or intelligence. For this reason, the Prophet ﷺ would often make dua for firmness.

O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion.

Narrated by At-Tirmidhi; authenticated by a number of scholars.

{رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا وَهَبْ لَنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ رَحْمَةً إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الوَهَّابُ}Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from Yourself. Indeed, You are the Bestower. [Aal Imran 3:8]

Let the Muslim often make this dua, especially after acts of worship, when fearing fitnah, in sujud, between the adhan and iqamah, and in the last part of the night.

Character

9. Watch the Effect of Worship on Character and Dealings

One fruit of sincere obedience is that its effect appears in character: kindness to parents, good treatment of a spouse, mercy toward children, honesty in buying and selling, guarding the tongue, and leaving oppression and backbiting.

{إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَى عَنِ الفَحْشَاءِ وَالمُنْكَرِ وَلِذِكْرُ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَصْنَعُونَ}Indeed, prayer prevents immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. Allah knows what you do. [Al-Ankabut 29:45]

The goal is not to be active in worship while having bad manners with family or wronging people.

Gratitude

10. Thank Allah for Success and Ask Him for More

If Allah enables you to obey Him after a blessed season, do not attribute the favor to yourself. Praise Allah and ask Him for more of His bounty.

Whatever blessing you have is from Allah. [An-Nahl 16:53]
If you are grateful, I will surely increase you. [Ibrahim 14:7]

Gratitude preserves blessings and increases them. One of the greatest forms of gratitude is using health, time, and guidance in obedience to Allah.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistakes After Blessed Seasons

  • Leaving prayer or delaying it after being active in the season.
  • Completely cutting off Qur'an after Ramadan, Hajj, or Dhul-Hijjah.
  • Creating an oversized program and abandoning it after a few days.
  • Returning to bad company or causes of sin.
  • Despairing at the first weakness or shortcoming.
  • Becoming arrogant due to worship and looking down on those who fall short.
  • Connecting worship only to feelings, then leaving deeds when feelings weaken.
  • Forgetting to ask Allah for acceptance and steadfastness.
Good Signs

Good Signs After the Season

A Muslim does not claim acceptance for himself, but among the signs by which he hopes for good are:

  • He is better after the season than before it.
  • He preserves the obligations.
  • He keeps a fixed portion of Qur'an and dhikr.
  • He dislikes returning to sin.
  • His heart becomes softer and his character better.
  • He asks Allah for acceptance and fears shortcomings.
  • He continues upon some obedience, even if little.
Frequently Asked Questions
Question

Is weak motivation after a season proof that the deed was not accepted?

Not necessarily. A person may be active at times and weaker at other times. The danger is when weakness becomes leaving obligations or returning to sins. If the servant weakens, he should preserve the obligations, stay firm upon a little, and ask Allah for steadfastness.

Question

What should I do if I return to an old sin after the season?

Repent to Allah immediately and do not delay repentance. Cut off the causes of the sin, avoid its places, replace the bad deed with a good deed, and do not despair of Allah’s mercy.

Question

What is the smallest program I can maintain after the season?

A beneficial minimum program is: prayer on time, morning and evening adhkar, a small Qur'an portion, daily istighfar, and leaving one sin you know weakens your heart. If the servant becomes firm on this, he can add more according to ability.

Question

Is it better to do many voluntary deeds or preserve a little?

It is better to begin with what you can maintain, because the Prophet ﷺ said: “The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if few.” Agreed upon. If Allah opens a door for more without interruption or neglecting obligations, that is good.

Question

How can I maintain worship with work or study?

Put obligations first, then choose short consistent deeds: adhkar on the way, a Qur'an portion before sleep or after Fajr, a small charity, and dua in sujud. Worship does not always need a long time, but it needs sincerity, organization, and seeking Allah’s help.

Question

Is it enough to strive only in Ramadan or Dhul-Hijjah?

No. Striving in blessed seasons is great good, but it does not replace uprightness during the rest of the year. Allah says: “Worship your Lord until certainty comes to you” [Al-Hijr 15:99]. The Muslim rejoices in blessed seasons and makes them provision for what comes after.

Question

How do I know I am on the right path after the season?

Look first at the obligations: are you preserving them? Then look at sins: are you striving to leave them? Then look at consistent deeds: do you have a fixed share, even if small? If you find this, praise Allah and ask Him for increase and steadfastness.

Conclusion

Conclusion

Blessed seasons are a great blessing, but they are not the end of the road. They are provision that helps a Muslim remain upright afterward. Preserve the effect of obedience by asking for acceptance, guarding obligations, repenting quickly, continuing with a little, keeping righteous company, and making much dua for steadfastness.

Whoever Allah enables to follow one act of obedience with another should know that this is from Allah’s favor. Let him praise his Lord and say with a truthful heart: Our Lord, accept from us, make our hearts firm upon Your religion, and help us remember You, thank You, and worship You well.
