Women’s PurificationHow a Woman Performs Ghusl After Menstruation and Postpartum Bleeding
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and companions.
Purification after menstruation and postpartum bleeding is an important ruling every Muslim woman needs to know, because prayer, tawaf, and similar acts resume only after purity and ghusl. As for fasting, what matters is that menstruation or postpartum bleeding ends before Fajr; the fast is valid even if ghusl is delayed until after Fajr, as with the person in janabah.
Say: It is harm, so keep away from women during menstruation and do not approach them until they are pure. When they have purified themselves, then come to them from where Allah has commanded you. Indeed, Allah loves those who repent and those who purify themselves. [Al-Baqarah 2:222]
When the menstruation comes, leave prayer; and when it goes, wash the blood from yourself and pray.
Agreed upon.
When RequiredWhen Is Ghusl Required for a Woman?
Ghusl is required when menstruation stops and the woman sees a sign of purity. It is also required when postpartum bleeding stops and purity occurs. A woman does not pray until she becomes pure; when she becomes pure, she performs ghusl and prays.
Ghusl is not done while menstruation or postpartum bleeding is still continuing with the intention of returning to prayer, because the preventing cause is still present. Ghusl is done after purity.
Signs of PurityWhat Are the Signs of Purity from Menstruation?
A woman usually knows purity by one of two signs:
- The white discharge: a white fluid some women recognize at the end of menstruation.
- Complete dryness: placing cotton or something similar and it comes out clean, with no blood, yellow discharge, or brown discharge connected to menstruation.
Not all women see the white discharge. Whoever’s usual sign is dryness acts upon that.
Do not hurry until you see the white discharge.
Narrated by Malik in Al-Muwatta from Aishah رضي الله عنها; mentioned by Al-Bukhari in a suspended form.
Yellow/Brown DischargeWhat About Yellow or Brown Discharge?
Yellow or brown discharge during the days of menstruation, or connected to it, takes the ruling of menstruation according to many scholars. But if a woman sees purity and then later sees yellow or brown discharge, she does not count it as menstruation according to a group of scholars.
We did not consider brown or yellow discharge after purity to be anything.
Narrated by Al-Bukhari from Umm Atiyyah رضي الله عنها.
These issues can differ according to a woman’s usual habit and whether the blood is connected or interrupted. Whoever is unsure should ask the people of knowledge and avoid waswasah.
Minimum Valid GhuslThe Sufficient Ghusl
The sufficient ghusl is the minimum by which purification is valid:
- Intend in the heart to remove hadath and become purified for prayer.
- Wash the entire body with water.
- Make water reach the roots of the hair and the skin.
- Pay attention to areas water may not reach easily.
It is safer not to leave rinsing the mouth and nose during ghusl, to avoid disagreement and follow the more complete practice.
Complete GhuslThe Complete Ghusl
The complete ghusl is for a woman to wash in the general manner of the Prophet’s ghusl ﷺ:
- Intend purification from menstruation or postpartum bleeding.
- Wash the hands.
- Wash the place of blood and whatever it affected.
- Perform wudu as for prayer.
- Pour water over the head and make it reach the roots of the hair.
- Wash the rest of the body, beginning with the right side then the left if easy.
- Ensure water reaches all parts of the body.
The description of the Prophet’s ghusl from janabah is established in the two Sahihs from Aishah رضي الله عنها, and it is a foundation for the complete manner of ghusl, along with the extra care mentioned regarding removing the trace of menstrual blood.
MuskUsing Fragrance or Musk After Menstruation
It is recommended after ghusl from menstruation for a woman to use some musk or fragrance on the place of blood to remove odor, if available and if it causes no harm.
One of you should take her water and sidr and purify herself, doing purification well. Then she should pour water over her head and rub it strongly until it reaches the roots of her hair, then pour water over herself, then take a piece of cloth scented with musk and purify herself with it.
Narrated by Muslim.
The scented piece means cotton or cloth with musk or fragrance. If musk is unavailable, she may use what removes the trace and odor without harming her.
HairMust Braids Be Undone?
A woman does not have to undo her braids for ghusl from janabah if water reaches the roots. As for ghusl after menstruation, some scholars emphasized undoing the hair or giving extra care because of the command to rub thoroughly in the hadith of menstrual ghusl, while others held that the objective is for water to reach the roots.
It is safer for a woman in ghusl from menstruation and postpartum bleeding to give greater care to her hair and ensure water reaches the roots. If the hair is braided in a way that prevents water reaching the roots, she must undo what prevents the water. If water reaches the roots without undoing it, she should not open the door to waswasah.
WuduDoes Ghusl from Menstruation or Postpartum Bleeding Replace Wudu?
If a woman performs ghusl from menstruation or postpartum bleeding with the intention of removing hadath and washes her whole body, it suffices for wudu according to a group of scholars, especially if she performs wudu inside the ghusl as in the complete manner. The more complete practice is to perform wudu during ghusl.
If she performs ghusl and then does something that nullifies wudu afterward, she must perform wudu for prayer.
PrayerWhen Does a Woman Pray After Becoming Pure?
If a woman becomes pure before the prayer time exits, she must perform ghusl and pray that prayer. She may not delay ghusl until the time exits while able.
If she does not see purity until after the time exits, she is not required to pray that prayer whose time passed while she was menstruating. These issues may have details, especially if purity occurs near the end of the time, so she should ask the people of knowledge if unsure.
TayammumWhat If She Cannot Find Water or Using It Harms Her?
If a woman becomes pure from menstruation or postpartum bleeding and cannot find water, or using water would harm her due to illness or severe cold she cannot protect herself from, she performs tayammum and prays until she finds water or is able to use it.
{فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا مَاءً فَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا فَامْسَحُوا بِوُجُوهِكُمْ وَأَيْدِيكُمْ مِنْهُ}If you cannot find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth and wipe your faces and hands with it. [Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
WarningsCommon Mistakes in Ghusl from Menstruation and Postpartum Bleeding
- Delaying ghusl after purity until the prayer time exits.
- Performing ghusl before purity is confirmed, then leaving prayer after true purity occurs.
- Entering waswasah because of yellow or brown discharge after seeing purity.
- Not making water reach the roots of the hair.
- Thinking ghusl is only valid if every limb is washed three times.
- Leaving the intention or bathing only for cleanliness without intending purification.
- Not washing the place of blood and whatever it affected.
QuestionIs ghusl required as soon as the blood stops?
If the blood stops and the woman sees a sign of purity, such as the white discharge or complete dryness, ghusl and prayer become required. As for a temporary stop that is not considered purity in her usual habit, there is detail.
QuestionDoes yellow or brown discharge after purity prevent prayer?
If a woman sees purity and then sees yellow or brown discharge afterward, she does not count it as menstruation according to a group of scholars, due to the hadith of Umm Atiyyah رضي الله عنها. If it is connected to menstruation before seeing purity, it takes the ruling of menstruation according to many scholars.
QuestionIs using musk after menstrual ghusl required?
Using musk or fragrance is recommended to remove the trace and odor of blood, but it is not a condition for the validity of ghusl. If it is unavailable, there is no harm.
QuestionIs shampoo required?
Shampoo is not required. What is required is that water reaches the roots of the hair and the skin. If a woman needs shampoo for cleanliness, there is no problem.
QuestionCan a woman with postpartum bleeding perform ghusl before forty days?
Yes. If a woman becomes pure before forty days, she performs ghusl, prays, and fasts. She does not wait for the forty days to complete. The ruling depends on purity, not merely the number of days.
QuestionIf I became pure before Fajr but only performed ghusl after Fajr, is the fast valid?
Yes. If menstruation or postpartum bleeding stopped before Fajr and the woman intended to fast, her fast is valid even if she delayed ghusl until after Fajr. But she must perform ghusl before the time of Fajr prayer exits so she can pray on time.
QuestionWhat if postpartum bleeding continues after forty days?
This requires detail based on the nature of the blood and the woman’s usual habit, and scholars have well-known discussions about the maximum length of postpartum bleeding. Whoever continues bleeding after forty days should ask the people of knowledge about her specific case and not act on assumptions.
QuestionDoes a menstruating woman make up missed prayers after becoming pure?
A menstruating woman does not make up the prayers she missed during menstruation. She does make up obligatory fasts, such as fasting Ramadan.
That used to happen to us, and we were commanded to make up the fasts, but we were not commanded to make up the prayers.
Agreed upon from Aishah رضي الله عنها.
ConclusionConclusion
A woman’s ghusl after menstruation and postpartum bleeding is a great act of worship by which she returns to prayer and purification. Its foundation is simple: intention, washing the entire body with water, and making water reach the roots of the hair and the skin. A Muslim woman should learn the manner of ghusl, avoid delaying prayer after purity, and also avoid waswasah and unnecessary hardship, for Allah loves those who repent and those who purify themselves.
