Mawlid and Following the Sunnah

The Ruling on Celebrating the Prophet’s Mawlid in Light of the Sunnah and the Understanding of the Companions

Love of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him is a great foundation of faith. The required faith of a servant is not complete until the Messenger of Allah peace and blessings be upon him is more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all people. The Prophet peace and blessings be upon him said:

"None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all people."

Agreed upon.

But the truthfulness of this love is not measured merely by emotion or good intention. Rather, it appears through following his Sunnah, believing his reports, obeying his commands, avoiding what he forbade, and worshiping Allah only through what He legislated.

Among the issues whose ruling must be clarified is singling out the birth of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him with an annual religious celebration. This celebration was not legislated by the Messenger of Allah peace and blessings be upon him, nor was it practiced by his rightly guided caliphs or his Companions may Allah be pleased with them, nor was it known in the virtuous early generations. It is therefore a newly introduced and rejected innovation. It is not from love of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him or from honoring him to seek nearness to Allah through something Allah did not permit.

What Is Meant by Celebrating the Prophet’s Mawlid?
Section

What Is Meant by Celebrating the Prophet’s Mawlid?

What is meant is singling out a day or night every year, believed to correspond to the birth of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him, with a gathering or repeated rituals intended as worship, nearness to Allah, and showing love for His Messenger, such as singling it out for recitation, praise poems, food, charity, or other acts.

As for teaching the Prophetic Seerah, sending salah upon the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him, feeding people, and teaching people his Sunnah throughout the year, these are all lawful in their origin when done in the lawful manner. The issue being discussed is making a specific day a repeated religious season without evidence that singles it out.

Section

What Is the Ruling on Celebrating the Prophet’s Mawlid?

Singling out the birth of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him with an annual religious celebration is not legislated, and it is from newly introduced innovations. That is because the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him did not legislate it for his Ummah, his rightly guided caliphs did not do it, nor did the rest of the Companions may Allah be pleased with them, nor those who followed them with excellence, despite their perfect love for him, their intense eagerness for good, and their knowledge of his Sunnah.

This ruling is not changed by the fact that some actions done during the celebration may be lawful in their origin. Singling out an act of worship with a specific time and making it a repeated religious form needs evidence. Worship is not legislated by good intention alone; it must combine sincerity to Allah with following the Messenger of Allah peace and blessings be upon him.

Worship and Religious Seasons Are Only Established by Evidence

Worship and Religious Seasons Are Only Established by Evidence

Allah says:

{Or have they partners who have legislated for them of the religion that which Allah has not permitted? And if not for the decisive word, it would have been concluded between them. And indeed, the wrongdoers will have a painful punishment} [Ash-Shura: 21].

Acts of worship are based on textual evidence, and no one may make a statement or action an act of worship, or single out a time for worship, without evidence from the Book or the Sunnah.

Anas may Allah be pleased with him narrated:

"The Messenger of Allah peace and blessings be upon him came to Madinah, and they had two days in which they would play. He said: What are these two days? They said: We used to play in them during Jahiliyyah. The Messenger of Allah peace and blessings be upon him said: Allah has replaced them for you with two better than them: the day of al-Adha and the day of al-Fitr."

Narrated by Abu Dawud and an-Nasai, and authenticated by al-Albani.

A gathering that returns every year as an act of worship and reverence takes the meaning of a religious season or Eid. Muslims may not establish a third annual Eid that Allah did not permit. The problem is not merely the word "celebration"; rather, it is the reality of religious specification and annual repetition.

Love of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him Is Through Following Him
Section

Love of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him Is Through Following Him

Allah says:

{Say: If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Say: Obey Allah and the Messenger. But if they turn away, then indeed, Allah does not love the disbelievers} [Al Imran: 31-32].

And He says:

{There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often} [Al-Ahzab: 21].

Allah made the sign of truthful love following the Messenger peace and blessings be upon him, and He made him the excellent example. Therefore, what is legislated for the Muslim is to stop where the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him and his Companions stopped in matters of worship.

To learn the forms of this love and its practical effects, one may refer to the related article: Loving the Prophet Muhammad: Meaning and Signs.

Evidence From the Sunnah Rejecting Newly Introduced Acts of Worship

Evidence From the Sunnah Rejecting Newly Introduced Acts of Worship

The Prophet peace and blessings be upon him said:

"Whoever introduces into this matter of ours that which is not from it, it is rejected."

Agreed upon.

In a narration of Muslim:

"Whoever does an action that is not in accordance with our matter, it is rejected."

The meaning of "it is rejected" is that it is returned upon the one who does it and is not accepted as worship, because it did not agree with the guidance of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him.

Al-Irbad ibn Sariyah may Allah be pleased with him said:

"The Messenger of Allah peace and blessings be upon him gave us an admonition by which hearts trembled and eyes shed tears. We said: O Messenger of Allah, it is as if it is a farewell admonition, so advise us. He said: I advise you to fear Allah, and to hear and obey, even if an Abyssinian slave is appointed over you. Whoever lives among you after me will see much disagreement, so hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs after me. Hold firmly to it and bite onto it with your molar teeth. Beware of newly introduced matters, for every newly introduced matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance."

Narrated by Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi. At-Tirmidhi said it is a hasan sahih hadith, and al-Albani authenticated it.

Why Is the Companions’ Leaving This Celebration an Important Evidence?
Section

Why Is the Companions’ Leaving This Celebration an Important Evidence?

The Prophet peace and blessings be upon him was born and lived among his Companions. They knew his rank, sacrificed themselves and their wealth for him, preserved his statements and actions, and transmitted the finest details of his life to the Ummah. Then they lived after his death, yet it is not transmitted from Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, or any of the other Companions may Allah be pleased with them that they singled out his birth with an annual celebration.

The point of evidence is clear: the reason for the celebration existed during the time of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him and his Companions, their love for him was more complete, and there was nothing preventing them from establishing it, yet they all left it. If it had been a legislated act of worship or a good deed by which one draws near to Allah, they would have preceded the Ummah to it. Therefore, introducing it after them is not an increase in love for him; rather, it is seeking nearness to Allah through an act of worship that Allah did not permit and His Messenger peace and blessings be upon him did not legislate.

Abdullah ibn Umar may Allah be pleased with themا said:

"Every innovation is misguidance, even if people see it as good."

Narrated by al-Lalakai and al-Bayhaqi, and authenticated by al-Albani.

Celebrating the Mawlid was not known during the time of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him, nor during the time of the Companions and the Tabiin, nor in the virtuous early generations. Rather, it appeared centuries later.

The Prophet peace and blessings be upon him said:

"The best of people are my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them."

Agreed upon.

This celebration was not known in those generations that the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him testified to as being the best, nor was it practiced by the followed Imams of Islam among them. Its appearance after the virtuous generations confirms that it is not from the Sunnah that the Salaf received from the Messenger of Allah peace and blessings be upon him.

When Did the Celebration of the Prophet’s Mawlid Appear?
Section

When Did the Celebration of the Prophet’s Mawlid Appear?

Muslims did not know the celebration of the Mawlid during the first three virtuous generations. The first well-known establishment of it as an official repeated season was during the era of the Ubaydi state that called itself Fatimid, in the late fourth Hijri century. They established several Mawlids and seasons, including the Mawlid of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him and other Mawlids.

The celebration then moved to some lands and took different forms. The Islamic ruling is not built on the history of its appearance alone, but its appearance after the virtuous generations confirms that it fits the description of a newly introduced innovation, and that it was not from the practice of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him, his Companions, or the Imams of the Salaf.

Is the Hadith About Fasting Monday Evidence for Celebrating the Mawlid?
Section

Is the Hadith About Fasting Monday Evidence for Celebrating the Mawlid?

The Prophet peace and blessings be upon him was asked about fasting Monday, and he said:

"That is the day on which I was born, and the day on which I was sent, or revelation came down to me."

Narrated by Muslim.

This hadith proves the legislation of fasting Monday, and that one of the reasons for fasting it is that it is the day on which the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him was born and revelation came down to him. It does not prove singling out one day of the year with a celebration. The action authentically established from him concerning the day of his birth is fasting Monday every week, not holding an annual celebration on a date in Rabi al-Awwal.

Whoever wants to follow him in this should fast Mondays according to his ability, and not replace the established Sunnah with an annual form that the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him and his Companions did not practice.

Discussing the Most Common Doubts About the Mawlid
Section

Discussing the Most Common Doubts About the Mawlid

The First Doubt: The Verse {In that let them rejoice}

Allah says:

{Say: In the bounty of Allah and in His mercy, in that let them rejoice; it is better than what they accumulate} [Yunus: 58].

Rejoicing in the bounty and mercy of Allah, in Islam, in the Quran, and in the sending of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him is a lawful and constant rejoicing. But the verse does not contain singling out the day of his birth with an annual celebration, and the Companions did not understand it that way. Using the verse as evidence for a specific act of worship requires clarification from the Messenger peace and blessings be upon him or the practice of his Companions, and nothing of that has been transmitted.

The Second Doubt: The Hadith "Whoever Introduces a Good Sunnah in Islam"

The Prophet peace and blessings be upon him said:

"Whoever introduces a good Sunnah in Islam will have its reward and the reward of those who act upon it after him, without that decreasing anything from their rewards. And whoever introduces an evil Sunnah in Islam will bear its burden and the burden of those who act upon it after him, without that decreasing anything from their burdens."

Narrated by Muslim.

The hadith was about a man who hastened to give charity, and then people followed him in giving charity. What is meant is initiating action upon a Sunnah that already has an established basis in the Shariah, or reviving it and hastening to it, not creating a new act of worship. Otherwise, such an understanding would contradict the Prophet’s statement peace and blessings be upon him, "Every innovation is misguidance," and his words do not contradict one another.

The Third Doubt: Umar’s Statement may Allah be pleased with him, "What a Good Innovation This Is"

Umar may Allah be pleased with him said this when he gathered the people behind one Imam for the night prayer in Ramadan. Praying night prayer in Ramadan in congregation was not a newly invented act of worship; the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him had prayed with his Companions for some nights, then left continuing the gathering out of fear that it would be made obligatory upon them. When the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him died, revelation ended and the fear of obligation was removed, so Umar revived an established Sunnah and gathered the people upon it.

He called it an innovation in the linguistic sense, meaning that its continuous congregational form was new compared to what people had become accustomed to at that time, not that it was a religious innovation with no basis.

The Fourth Doubt: The Story of Abu Lahab’s Punishment Being Lightened

Some people use as evidence the report that Abu Lahab’s punishment was lightened because he rejoiced at the birth of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him and freed Thuwaybah. What al-Bukhari mentioned from Urwah in the story of Thuwaybah is a mursal report containing a dream, not a marfu hadith attributed to the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him, and legal rulings are not established by it. As for the famous addition that his punishment is lightened every Monday because of his joy at the Mawlid, that wording is not in al-Bukhari.

The report contains no legislation of an annual celebration and no singling out the night of the Mawlid with worship. Even if it were assumed that Abu Lahab was rewarded for a particular act of kindness, the most it would show is that Allah recompensed him for that kindness. It does not prove the creation of a religious season for Muslims.

The Fifth Doubt: The Celebration Only Contains Quran, Seerah, and Food

Reciting the Quran, teaching the Seerah, sending salah upon the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him, giving charity, and feeding people are lawful actions in their lawful times and forms. But gathering them on a specific date that repeats every year, while believing in a special virtue for that gathering or seeking nearness to Allah through it as a Mawlid celebration, needs evidence.

The discussion is not about the original ruling of reciting Quran or giving charity; it is about singling them out with a time and form as a religious act that the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him did not legislate.

The Sixth Doubt: Did Ibn Taymiyyah Permit Celebrating the Mawlid?

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah may Allah have mercy on him did not permit taking the Mawlid as an Eid. Rather, he stated that it is "a newly introduced Eid that has no basis," and he explained that the Salaf did not do it despite the reason for it existing and no obstacle preventing it, and that if they had seen it as good, they would have preceded others to it.

As for his statement that some people may be rewarded for their love and good intention, it does not mean that the innovation is legislated. An ignorant person or someone mistaken in interpretation may be rewarded for his good intention, but not for the newly introduced act itself. He may Allah have mercy on him clearly stated this meaning when he said: "Allah may reward them for this love and effort, not for the innovations." A good intention may be an excuse for its doer, but it does not turn an action that opposes the Sunnah into a legislated Sunnah.

The Seventh Doubt: We Do Not Call It an Eid; We Call It a Commemoration

The reality of the action matters, not the name given to it. If people single out a day that returns every year and gather in it upon actions intended for nearness and reverence, it becomes a religious season and Eid in the Shariah meaning, even if it is called a commemoration, occasion, or celebration. Changing the name does not change the ruling.

The Eighth Doubt: The Basic Rule for Things Is Permissibility

This principle is correct regarding customs and worldly benefits. As for acts of worship and religious seasons, their foundation is textual evidence; nothing from them is legislated except what evidence proves. The Mawlid celebration is not performed as a mere worldly custom. Rather, it is intended as nearness to Allah and honoring the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him. Therefore, evidence for its legislation is required, and it is not enough to say that the basic rule is permissibility.

The Ninth Doubt: The Prophet’s Mere Leaving of Something Does Not Prove Prohibition

Not everything the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him left is forbidden merely because he left it. But this issue is not based on leaving alone. The celebration is an act of nearness and a religious season, the foundation of worship is textual evidence, its reason existed during his time, there was no obstacle preventing it, then he, his caliphs, his Companions, and the virtuous generations all left it, along with the texts rejecting newly introduced matters. The combination of these matters shows that taking the Mawlid as a religious season is not from the Sunnah.

The Tenth Doubt: The Mawlid Is a Good Innovation Like Compiling the Mushaf

Innovation in its religious meaning is all misguidance, as the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him informed us. Whatever has a basis in the Shariah, or is a lawful means to preserve something legislated, is not a religious innovation even if it is new linguistically or organizationally.

The Companions’ compiling of the Mushaf was not the creation of a new act of worship or the singling out of a religious season. Rather, it was a means of preserving the Quran, which Allah commanded to be recited, conveyed, and acted upon, and the need to compile it into one Mushaf appeared after a number of reciters died. As for the reason for celebrating the Mawlid, namely the birth of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him and love for him, it existed during his life and after his death, yet the Companions did not take it as worship or a season. Therefore, one matter cannot be compared to the other.

Is Everyone Who Celebrates the Mawlid a Disbeliever or Polytheist?
Section

Is Everyone Who Celebrates the Mawlid a Disbeliever or Polytheist?

No. Saying that the celebration is an innovation does not mean declaring everyone who does it a disbeliever or judging him to have committed shirk. A Muslim may do it out of ignorance, imitation, or mistaken interpretation while thinking that he is expressing love through it.

The ruling on an action is one thing, and the ruling on a specific individual is another. A Muslim is not declared a disbeliever merely for participating in a Mawlid celebration. But if the celebration includes invoking the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him besides Allah, seeking rescue from him in matters only Allah can do, or other worship directed to other than Allah, then these are independent acts of shirk that must be condemned and whose danger must be clarified, while observing the rules for judging specific individuals and referring that matter to the people of knowledge.

What Are the Lawful Ways to Show Love for the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him?

  • Following his Sunnah and giving his guidance priority over customs and desires.
  • Learning his authentic Seerah and teaching it to one’s family and children throughout the year.
  • Sending salah and salam upon him often with the established wordings, without exaggeration.
  • Believing his reports, obeying his commands, and avoiding his prohibitions.
  • Fasting Monday in imitation of him according to one’s ability.
  • Spreading his authentic Sunnah and defending it with wisdom and knowledge.
  • Loving his household, his wives the Mothers of the Believers, and his Companions may Allah be pleased with them, while preserving their rights and honor.
  • Avoiding exaggeration regarding him, for he peace and blessings be upon him said: "Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians exaggerated in praising the son of Mary. I am only His slave, so say: the slave of Allah and His Messenger." Narrated by al-Bukhari.

Is It Permissible to Single Out Rabi al-Awwal for Teaching the Seerah?
Section

Is It Permissible to Single Out Rabi al-Awwal for Teaching the Seerah?

It is not legislated to single out Rabi al-Awwal, or a particular day from it, with a lesson that repeats every year while believing in the virtue of that specification or reviving the memory of the Mawlid, because this special status has not been established by evidence.

As for teaching the Seerah throughout the year, that is beneficial knowledge. A lesson that happens to occur in Rabi al-Awwal as part of a normal educational program, without believing in any special virtue for the month and without taking the lesson as a repeated season, is not prevented. The difference between the two matters is the intention of specification, the form of the gathering, and its repetition because of the occasion.

How Should a Muslim Advise Someone Who Celebrates the Mawlid?
Section

How Should a Muslim Advise Someone Who Celebrates the Mawlid?

He advises him with knowledge and gentleness. He begins by affirming the obligation of loving the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him, then clarifies that the most complete people in love for him were his Companions, and they did not celebrate his birth. He explains the difference between actions that are lawful in their origin and singling them out with a time and religious form without evidence.

Advice should not become a cause for insults, belittling, cutting family ties, or hastiness in takfir. Allah says:

{Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in the best manner. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is guided} [An-Nahl: 125].

Mistakes to Avoid

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Making love of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him a justification for introducing an act of worship he did not legislate.
  • Using weak hadiths, stories, or dreams to establish a legal ruling.
  • Some celebrations containing exaggeration, calling upon other than Allah, or praise poems that include descriptions suitable only for Allah.
  • Forbidden mixing, musical instruments, extravagance, or neglecting obligations.
  • Declaring all celebrants to be disbelievers or attacking their intentions without knowledge.
  • Turning the disagreement into hostility and cutting ties instead of clarifying with wisdom and gentleness.
  • Becoming occupied with an annual celebration while falling short in following the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him in prayer, character, and dealings throughout the year.
Frequently Asked Questions About Celebrating the Prophet’s Mawlid
Question

Is celebrating the Mawlid a Sunnah or an obligation?

It is neither a Sunnah nor an obligation. The Prophet peace and blessings be upon him did not command it, did not do it, and his Companions may Allah be pleased with them did not do it. Taking it as a repeated religious celebration is a newly introduced innovation.

Question

Is it permissible to celebrate if it is free of music, mixing, and exaggeration?

Removing forbidden elements removes some accompanying evils, but it does not make singling out the Mawlid with a religious celebration legislated, because the original specification and repetition as worship need evidence.

Question

Is it established that the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him was born on the twelfth of Rabi al-Awwal?

It is established that he peace and blessings be upon him was born on a Monday, but the scholars of Seerah differed over the exact day of Rabi al-Awwal. The disagreement over the date is not the foundation of the ruling. Even if a specific day were established, the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him and his Companions did not legislate celebrating it.

Question

Is fasting Monday a celebration of the Mawlid?

Fasting Monday is a weekly Prophetic Sunnah, not an annual celebration. It is the action established from the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him when he mentioned that Monday was the day on which he was born and revelation came down to him.

Question

Is it permissible to attend the Mawlid out of courtesy or maintaining family ties?

It is not permissible for a Muslim to participate in a Mawlid celebration for courtesy, because courtesy does not permit participation in a newly introduced act of worship. He can maintain family ties, visit them, and show kindness to them at another time, and excuse himself politely while clarifying the ruling without argument.

Question

Is congratulating people on the Prophet’s Mawlid permissible?

Congratulating people on the Mawlid is not legislated, because it is congratulation for a repeated religious occasion that Allah and His Messenger peace and blessings be upon him did not legislate, and it contains approval of the newly introduced season. The Muslim clarifies the ruling gently and replaces that with lawful supplication and kind speech outside this occasion.

Question

Is it permissible to eat food distributed for the Mawlid?

If food or sweets are made and distributed for the Mawlid, the Muslim should not participate in eating or distributing them, because that is participation in reviving the newly introduced occasion and assisting it. As for ordinary food that was not made for the Mawlid and is not connected to it, it remains upon the basic ruling of permissibility.

Question

Is it permissible to recite praise poems during a Mawlid celebration?

It is not permissible to recite praise poems as part of a Mawlid celebration, because participation in the rituals of the newly introduced occasion is not legislated, even if the words of the poem are sound in themselves. As for truthful poetry praising the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him outside the Mawlid, then in principle it is permissible if it is free of exaggeration, musical instruments, and forbidden matters, and if it does not include invoking him besides Allah, attributing absolute knowledge of the unseen to him, or raising him above the station Allah gave him.

Question

Is it permissible to single out Rabi al-Awwal for reading the Seerah?

It is not legislated to believe in a special virtue for singling out the month with an annual religious program that is not established. As for teaching the Seerah during it as part of regular education, without believing in special virtue and without taking it as a repeated celebration, that is permissible.

Question

What is the best deed a Muslim can do to express his love for the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him?

The best of that is following his Sunnah outwardly and inwardly, preserving the obligations, avoiding what he forbade, learning his Seerah, sending salah and salam upon him often, and spreading his authentic guidance throughout the year.

Conclusion

Love of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him is a noble act of worship that is not reduced to one day of the year. The most truthful people in love for him are those who hold firmly to his Sunnah, follow the example of his Companions, and fill their lives with obedience to him without exaggeration or neglect. We ask Allah to grant us truthful love for him, following of His Prophet peace and blessings be upon him, and steadfastness upon his Sunnah until we meet Him.
