Aqidah and Tawhid

The Meaning of Tawhid and Its Categories in Brief

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and companions.

Tawhid is the foundation of Islam and the greatest command Allah gave His servants. It is the purpose for which Allah created jinn and mankind, sent the Messengers, and revealed the Books. No deed of a servant is sound unless it is built upon singling Allah out and making worship sincerely for Him alone.

I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me. [Adh-Dhariyat 51:56]
We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, saying: Worship Allah and avoid taghut. [An-Nahl 16:36]
Allah’s right over His servants is that they worship Him and do not associate anything with Him, and the servants’ right upon Allah is that He does not punish whoever does not associate anything with Him.

Agreed upon from the hadith of Muadh ibn Jabal

The Meaning of Tawhid and Why Its Categories Are Mentioned
Definition

What Does Tawhid Mean?

Tawhid means singling Allah out in what is specific to Him: Lordship, worship, and names and attributes.

It means that the servant believes Allah alone is the Creator, Provider, and Controller; that He alone deserves worship; and that He has the most beautiful names and highest attributes, with nothing from His creation resembling Him.

وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ}Say: He is Allah, One. Allah, the Self-Sufficient Master. He neither begets nor is born. And there is none comparable to Him. [Al-Ikhlas 112:1-4]
Teaching

Why Do Scholars Mention Categories of Tawhid?

Dividing tawhid into categories is not inventing a new meaning. It is an educational method derived from examining the texts of the Quran and Sunnah. The Quran explains that Allah is the Creator and Provider, commands that He alone be worshipped, and affirms His names and attributes in the manner befitting Him.

The validity of tawhid does not depend on memorizing the names of these categories. The purpose is to understand what the texts indicate and act upon it.

  • Tawhid of Lordship.
  • Tawhid of Worship.
  • Tawhid of Names and Attributes.
Comprehensive Evidences

Texts Where These Meanings Appear

إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ}All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful, Master of the Day of Judgment. You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help. [Al-Fatihah 1:2-5]

“Lord of the worlds” affirms His Lordship; “the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful, Master of the Day of Judgment” affirms His names and attributes; and “You alone we worship” singles Allah out in worship.

{رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا فَاعْبُدْهُ وَاصْطَبِرْ لِعِبَادَتِهِ هَلْ تَعْلَمُ لَهُ سَمِيًّا}Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, so worship Him and remain patient in His worship. Do you know of any equal to Him? [Maryam 19:65]

This verse mentions His Lordship over the heavens and the earth, commands worship of Him alone, and declares Him free of any equal in His names and attributes.

قُلْ أَفَغَيْرَ اللَّهِ تَأْمُرُونِّي أَعْبُدُ أَيُّهَا الجَاهِلُونَ}Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is Guardian over all things. To Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth. Those who disbelieve in the signs of Allah are the losers. Say: Is it other than Allah that you command me to worship, O ignorant ones? [Az-Zumar 39:62-64]

Allah mentions that He is the Creator of everything, which is from Lordship, then He rejects worship of other than Him, which is from Tawhid of worship.

Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth... and He is the Most High, the Magnificent. [Al-Baqarah 2:255]

This great verse includes singling Him out in worship in “Allah, none has the right to be worshipped except Him,” His Lordship, ownership, and control in “To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth,” and His names and attributes in “the Ever-Living, the Sustainer” and “He is the Most High, the Magnificent.”

هُوَ اللَّهُ الخَالِقُ البَارِئُ المُصَوِّرُ، لَهُ الأَسْمَاءُ الحُسْنَى، يُسَبِّحُ لَهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ، وَهُوَ العَزِيزُ الحَكِيمُ}He is Allah, none has the right to be worshipped except Him, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed; He is the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful... He is Allah, the Creator, the Originator, the Fashioner; to Him belong the most beautiful names. [Al-Hashr 59:22-24]

These verses include Tawhid of worship in “none has the right to be worshipped except Him,” Tawhid of Lordship in “the Creator, the Originator, the Fashioner,” and Tawhid of names and attributes in the great names mentioned and in “to Him belong the most beautiful names.”

The Three Categories of Tawhid
First

First: Tawhid of Lordship

Tawhid of Lordship means believing that Allah alone is the Creator, Provider, Owner, Controller, Giver of life, and Giver of death.

Examples include the Muslim’s certainty that benefit and harm, creation and provision, and the management of the entire universe are in Allah’s hand alone, and that He has no partner in any of that.

Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is Guardian over all things. [Az-Zumar 39:62]
وَمَنْ يُدَبِّرُ الأَمْرَ فَسَيَقُولُونَ اللَّهُ فَقُلْ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ}Say: Who provides for you from the heaven and the earth... and who controls the affair? They will say: Allah. So say: Will you not fear Him? [Yunus 10:31]
Second

Second: Tawhid of Worship

Tawhid of worship means singling Allah alone out with worship. None is called upon except Allah, no sacrifice is made except for Allah, no vow is made except for Allah, the servant relies upon none but Allah, and no act of worship is directed to other than Him.

This is the meaning of the testimony that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah.

Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him. [An-Nisa 4:36]
{فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنْبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالمُؤْمِنَاتِ}Know that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and seek forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. [Muhammad 47:19]

Worship is a comprehensive term for everything Allah loves and is pleased with from outward and inward statements and actions, such as prayer, supplication, fear, hope, love, reliance, and seeking help in what only Allah can do.

Third

Third: Tawhid of Names and Attributes

Tawhid of names and attributes means believing in what Allah named and described Himself with, and what His Messenger ﷺ named and described Him with, without distortion, denial, asking how, or likening Him to creation.

There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. [Ash-Shura 42:11]
To Allah belong the most beautiful names, so call upon Him by them. [Al-A'raf 7:180]

The way of the Salaf in this subject is to affirm what Allah affirmed for Himself and what His Messenger ﷺ affirmed for Him, in a manner befitting His majesty, without resembling Him to created beings, while declaring Him free of imperfection without negating what is established in revelation.

Important Notes in Understanding Tawhid
Not Sufficient Alone

Is Tawhid of Lordship Alone Enough?

It is not enough for a person to acknowledge only that Allah is the Creator and Provider. He must worship Allah alone. The polytheists to whom the Prophet ﷺ was sent acknowledged that Allah was the Creator, yet they were not monotheists because they directed worship to other than Allah.

{وَلَئِنْ سَأَلْتَهُمْ مَنْ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ وَسَخَّرَ الشَّمْسَ وَالقَمَرَ لَيَقُولُنَّ اللَّهُ فَأَنَّى يُؤْفَكُونَ}If you ask them who created the heavens and the earth and subjected the sun and the moon, they will surely say: Allah. So how are they deluded? [Al-Ankabut 29:61]
Connection

What Is the Relationship Between the Categories of Tawhid?

The categories of tawhid are connected and are not separate beliefs. Whoever believes that Allah alone is the Creator, Provider, and Controller must worship Him alone. Whoever truly worships Him believes in what is established for Him of the most beautiful names and highest attributes.

فَلَا تَجْعَلُوا لِلَّهِ أَنْدَادًا وَأَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ}O mankind, worship your Lord who created you... so do not set up rivals to Allah while you know. [Al-Baqarah 2:21-22]
Benefits

What Are the Fruits of Learning Tawhid?

  • Making worship sincerely for Allah alone.
  • Being saved from shirk, innovations, and superstitions.
  • Finding tranquility through reliance upon Allah.
  • The soundness and acceptance of deeds by Allah’s permission.
  • Knowing Allah’s right over the servant.
  • Being firm during trials and doubts.
Acceptance of Deeds

Tawhid Is a Condition for Deeds to Be Accepted

Allah does not accept a deed unless it is sincerely for Him and in accordance with the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ. Sincerity opposes shirk and showing off, and following the Sunnah opposes innovation.

{فَمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُو لِقَاءَ رَبِّهِ فَلْيَعْمَلْ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَلَا يُشْرِكْ بِعِبَادَةِ رَبِّهِ أَحَدًا}Whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord. [Al-Kahf 18:110]
Whoever does a deed that is not in accordance with our matter, it is rejected.

Frequently Asked Questions
Question

Is dividing tawhid into three categories an innovation?

No. This division is an educational description derived from examining the texts of the Quran and Sunnah. It is not a newly invented act of worship or an additional creed beyond revelation. The Quran and Sunnah affirm Allah’s Lordship, require singling Him out in worship, and affirm His names and attributes.

Question

Must every Muslim memorize the names of the three categories?

What is obligatory is to fulfill the tawhid Allah commanded and avoid shirk. Memorizing these category names is a beneficial tool for understanding and teaching aqidah, but it is not the goal in itself.

Question

What is the brief difference between Lordship and Worship?

Tawhid of Lordship relates to Allah’s actions, such as creating, providing, and controlling. Tawhid of Worship relates to the servants’ actions by which they draw near to Allah, such as supplication, prayer, sacrifice, vows, and reliance. Allah alone is the Lord, so He alone must be worshipped in truth.

Question

Is saying “La ilaha illa Allah” enough without acting upon its meaning?

This great statement contains negating worship from everything besides Allah and affirming it for Allah alone. Its meaning is not fulfilled by merely uttering it while persisting in directing worship to other than Allah. One must know its meaning, accept what it indicates, submit to Allah, and make worship sincerely for Him.

Question

Does every sin contradict the foundation of tawhid?

Sins are not all at one level. Some are major shirk that contradicts the foundation of tawhid. Others are minor shirk or sins that reduce its obligatory perfection but do not expel a Muslim from Islam merely by occurring. Judging a specific act or person has conditions, and unclear issues should be referred to reliable scholars.

Conclusion

Conclusion

Tawhid is the foundation of the religion, and its three categories help the Muslim understand Allah’s right over him: to believe in Allah’s Lordship, single Him out in worship, and affirm His names and attributes as they came in the Quran and Sunnah, upon the understanding of the righteous Salaf, without extremism or denial.
