Friday PrayerFriday Prayer: Its Rulings, Etiquettes, and Most Important Questions
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his companions.
Friday prayer is one of the greatest visible symbols of Islam. It is an individual obligation upon whoever fulfills its conditions. Muslims gather in it to hear remembrance and admonition and to perform two rak'ahs in congregation. Whoever is obligated to attend it may not be careless about it or allow trade, work, or amusement to distract him from it.
This article focuses on the juristic rulings of the prayer, the khutbah, and the most important questions related to them. As for a broader discussion of ghusl, coming early, reciting Surah al-Kahf, sending blessings upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the hour of response, see the article Sunnahs and Etiquettes of Friday.
SectionEvidence for the obligation of Friday prayer
Allah says:
{O you who believe, when the call is made for prayer on the day of Friday, then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew. Then when the prayer has been completed, disperse through the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah much so that you may succeed.} [al-Jumu'ah: 9-10].
Arabic wording of the central verse:
{يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِنْ يَوْمِ الجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَذَرُوا البَيْعَ}.
Allah commanded proceeding to Friday prayer and forbade trade at the call, and this indicates its obligation upon those addressed by it.
What is meant by proceeding here is intending, going, and giving importance to it, not running, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded whoever comes to prayer to come with calmness and dignity.
From Tariq ibn Shihab, may Allah be pleased with him, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
"Friday prayer is a binding duty upon every Muslim in congregation, except four: an owned slave, a woman, a child, or a sick person."
Narrated by Abu Dawud, and authenticated by a group of scholars.
SectionListening to the khutbah and the prohibition of speaking
When the khatib begins his khutbah, listening becomes obligatory, and speaking, fidgeting, and being busy with the phone must be left.
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
"If you say to your companion on Friday, 'Listen,' while the imam is delivering the khutbah, you have engaged in idle speech."
Agreed upon.
And he, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
"Whoever touches the pebbles has engaged in idle speech."
Narrated by Muslim.
So he should not return salam verbally during the khutbah, should not say yarhamuk Allah to one who sneezes, and should not verbally tell someone else to be quiet. Rather, he may gesture to him when needed. Speaking with the khatib is permissible for a recognized need, and it is permissible for the khatib to address some of those present when needed, because that is established from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. As for worshipers speaking to one another, it is not allowed except for a necessity that cannot be delayed, such as preventing immediate danger.
QuestionIs Friday prayer obligatory or Sunnah?
It is an individual obligation upon every Muslim male, adult, sane, resident, able to attend, and without an excuse. Its obligation is established by the Quran, Sunnah, and consensus.
QuestionIs leaving one Friday prayer kufr?
Leaving it without an excuse is a grave sin, but a Muslim is not judged to be a disbeliever merely for leaving one Friday out of laziness while affirming its obligation. As for denying the obligation of Friday prayer, which is known necessarily from the religion, its ruling is different because it denies the text and consensus. Judging a specific person returns to people of knowledge and Islamic judicial authority.
QuestionDoes proceeding to Friday prayer mean running?
No. What is meant is intending, giving importance, and going to it. The worshiper comes with calmness and dignity and does not run, even if he fears missing part of it.
QuestionWhen does the time of Friday prayer begin?
It is better for it to be after the sun passes its zenith, which is the view of the majority and the safer view. It is permissible shortly before the zenith according to a group of scholars, but the approved mosque timing should not be opposed, nor should the prayer be held early in a way that causes people hardship and disagreement.
QuestionHow many rak'ahs is Friday prayer?
It is two rak'ahs after the two khutbahs, and the imam recites aloud in them. Whoever catches Friday prayer does not pray Zuhr after it.
QuestionWhat do I pray if I miss Friday prayer?
If you can catch another Friday prayer being held, you must go to it. If that is not possible, you pray Zuhr as four rak'ahs if you are resident, and two rak'ahs if you are a traveler for whom shortening is legislated. You do not make up Friday prayer as two rak'ahs alone or after its time exits.
QuestionWhen have I caught Friday prayer?
If you catch the bowing of the second rak'ah with the imam, you have caught Friday prayer, and after his salam you stand and add one rak'ah. But if you enter after he has risen from bowing, you enter with him and then complete it as Zuhr, four rak'ahs if you are resident and the time of Zuhr has entered.
QuestionIs Friday prayer valid for one who missed the khutbah but caught the prayer?
Yes, if he caught one complete rak'ah with the imam by catching the bowing of the second rak'ah, his Friday prayer is valid, then he adds one rak'ah after the imam's salam. Missing the khutbah does not invalidate his Friday prayer in this case, but he misses the virtue of hearing it, and it is forbidden for him to deliberately delay until he misses the khutbah or to make a habit of that without excuse.
QuestionIs catching the final tashahhud enough for me to pray two rak'ahs?
No. You enter with the imam to preserve the congregation, but you have not caught Friday prayer. When he says salam, you pray Zuhr as four rak'ahs if you are resident and the time of Zuhr has entered.

No. A woman in her home prays Zuhr as four rak'ahs. If she attends the mosque and prays Friday prayer behind the imam, she prays two rak'ahs and it suffices for Zuhr.

QuestionWhen does someone not obligated to attend Friday prayer pray Zuhr?
Women, sick people, travelers, and other excused people may pray Zuhr after its time enters, even before Friday prayer finishes in the mosque, because Friday prayer is not obligatory upon them. The resident prays four rak'ahs, and the traveler prays two if shortening is legislated for him. They do not have to wait for the imam to finish. But whoever among them wants to attend Friday prayer should not pray Zuhr before it; if he prays Friday prayer with the imam, it suffices for Zuhr.
QuestionIs work an excuse for missing Friday prayer?
The default is that it is not an excuse. The Muslim must request time to perform Friday prayer and arrange his work. He is excused only in a true necessity that cannot be prevented, such as guarding a facility that may not be left, saving lives, or preventing severe harm that cannot be avoided, while striving to find a replacement or rotation. Ordinary work pressure or fear of a slight decrease in profit is not an excuse.
QuestionIs speaking during the khutbah permissible for necessity?
The default is that listening is obligatory and worshipers speaking to each other is forbidden. One only speaks for an urgent necessity that cannot be delayed, such as warning of direct danger. Speaking to the khatib, or answering the khatib, is permissible for a recognized need, and its like is established in the Sunnah.
QuestionDoes speaking during the khutbah invalidate Friday prayer?
It does not invalidate the Friday prayer itself, but it is forbidden without necessity. The one who does it is sinful and his reward for Friday prayer is reduced because of idle speech. He must repent and listen, and he does not repeat the prayer as long as the Friday prayer was performed validly.
QuestionDo I return salam or respond to someone who sneezes during the khutbah?
He does not return salam verbally and does not say yarhamuk Allah to the one who sneezes during the khutbah, because that is speech that is forbidden. He may gesture to the one who gave salam and explain the ruling after the khutbah ends.
QuestionMay the phone be used during the khutbah?
It is not permissible to be busy with messages, browsing, or filming, because that contradicts listening and enters into fidgeting and idle speech. As for quickly silencing it if it makes a sound, or using it for an urgent necessity, that is limited to the extent of need.
QuestionDo I pray the greeting of the mosque if the khatib is speaking?
Yes. You pray two brief rak'ahs, then sit and listen, due to the hadith of Sulaik al-Ghatafani, may Allah be pleased with him.
QuestionIs there a regular Sunnah prayer before Friday prayer?
There is no regular Sunnah before Friday prayer with a fixed number, but it is prescribed for whoever comes early to pray whatever is easy before the imam comes out.
QuestionHow many rak'ahs do I pray after Friday prayer?
You may pray two or four rak'ahs, because both forms are established. Voluntary prayer at home is better in principle, and some scholars chose four rak'ahs in the mosque and two at home.
QuestionShould hands be raised when the khatib makes du'a?
The default is that neither the khatib nor the congregation raises their hands during the du'a of the Friday khutbah. The congregation says amin quietly. The exception is the du'a for rain, because it is established that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, raised his hands for it while delivering the khutbah, and the people raised their hands with him.

He may not leave Friday prayer and pray Zuhr while he is able to catch Friday prayer and has no excuse. According to the majority of scholars, Zuhr is not valid from him before Friday prayer is missed, because he is commanded with Friday prayer at that time. He must go to Friday prayer. If he misses it, he prays Zuhr as four rak'ahs and must repent if he was negligent without an excuse.
QuestionIs Friday prayer valid at home with the family?
The family prayer at home is not a regular substitute for Friday prayer in the mosque. The excused resident prays Zuhr as four rak'ahs. A home Friday prayer should not be established except in a situation where the conditions of Friday prayer apply and trustworthy scholars decide it in a way that does not divide the congregation.
QuestionIs Friday prayer valid behind television or livestream?
No. Following a distant imam through television, radio, or the internet is not valid. Whoever does not attend the mosque prays Zuhr in his place.
QuestionMay Friday prayer be held at work or university?

But when attending a nearby mosque is possible, a parallel Friday prayer should not be established merely for convenience.
QuestionIs it permissible to have multiple Friday prayers in one city?

No, according to the stronger view. Asr is prayed in its time. A traveler who needs to combine may pray Zuhr and then combine Asr with it according to the rulings of travel.
QuestionIf Eid coincides with Friday, does Friday prayer fall?
The issue is disputed. Whoever attended Eid has a concession to leave Friday prayer according to a strong view, but he prays Zuhr as four rak'ahs. Attending Friday prayer is better. The imam of the mosque must establish Friday prayer for those who wish to attend and for those who did not pray Eid.
QuestionMay Zuhr be prayed after Friday prayer as a precaution?
That is not prescribed if Friday prayer was prayed validly, because Friday prayer is the obligation of the time and it suffices for Zuhr. Zuhr is not repeated after it merely because of general doubt or a precaution not based on a recognized Islamic reason.
