Purification and Fluid RulingsManiy, Madhiy, and Wadi: Differences and Purification Rulings
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his Companions.
Muslim men and women need to know the difference between maniy, madhiy, and wadi because the ruling differs according to the fluid. Maniy may require ghusl, whereas madhiy and wadi require washing the affected area and performing wudu but do not require ghusl. Not knowing this distinction may lead someone to pray without proper purification or to repeat ghusl unnecessarily and fall into waswas.
Allah, Exalted is He, says: “O you who believe, when you rise to perform prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet to the ankles. If you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves. But if you are ill, on a journey, have relieved yourselves, or have been intimate with women and cannot find water, then purify yourselves with clean earth, wiping your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you, so perhaps you will be grateful.” [Surah al-Ma’idah: 6]
Rulings at a Glance
- 1Maniy: It requires ghusl when it is discharged while awake with pleasure and its recognized characteristics, or when a sleeping person finds its trace after waking. When ghusl is required, merely washing the area and performing wudu is not sufficient.
- 2Madhiy: It is impure, invalidates wudu, and does not require ghusl. A man washes his penis and testicles; a woman washes its exit and whatever it touches on the exterior of her body; then the person from whom it emerged performs wudu.
- 3Wadi: It is impure and has the same ruling as urine. Its exit and whatever it touches must be washed, then wudu is performed. It does not require ghusl.
This is a useful summary, but knowing the characteristics of each fluid and the reason for its discharge helps prevent applying the wrong ruling.
Maniy: Characteristics and Rulings
Maniy is the fluid discharged because of sexual climax and is connected to the ruling of janabah. Among its common signs in a man is that it is thick and white, usually discharged forcefully with pleasure, followed by bodily relaxation. It may become thin because of illness or another condition, so color or consistency alone should not be relied upon.
Women also have maniy. It is commonly thin and yellow, though it may be white in some women. A woman recognizes it through the circumstances of its discharge, among the strongest of which are pleasure, the discharge of fluid, and the relaxation that follows. Not every characteristic must be present in every case.
Umm Sulaym, may Allah be pleased with her, asked the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about a woman who sees in her dream what a man sees. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “If a woman sees that, she must perform ghusl.” Umm Sulaym said that she felt shy and asked, “Does this happen?” The Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, replied: “Yes. From where, then, does resemblance come? A man’s fluid is thick and white, and a woman’s fluid is thin and yellow. Whichever of the two prevails or precedes is the cause of the resemblance.” Reported by Muslim.
Ghusl is required in the following two situations:
- 1Maniy is discharged while awake with pleasure and its recognized characteristics.
- 2A sleeping person sees the trace of maniy after waking, whether or not the person remembers a sexual dream.
The preceding hadith of Umm Sulaym, may Allah be pleased with her, shows that after sleep the ruling depends upon seeing the fluid. Whoever has a sexual dream but finds no fluid after waking does not have to perform ghusl. Whoever finds maniy must perform ghusl even if no dream is remembered.
If a fluid resembling maniy is discharged while awake because of illness or injury, without pleasure, forceful discharge, or subsequent relaxation, the stronger view is that it does not require ghusl. Its trace is washed and wudu is performed. If the condition is unusual or uncertainty remains, the Muslim should ask a trustworthy scholar and consult a physician when needed.
For the method of ghusl, read How to Make Ghusl from Janabah.
Scholars differed over whether maniy is pure. The stronger view is that it is pure; according to this view, prayer is not invalid merely because a trace remains on the garment or body. Nevertheless, removing its trace is prescribed, following what is authentically reported from Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her. Alqamah and al-Aswad reported that a man stayed with Aishah and washed his garment in the morning. Aishah said: “It would have been sufficient, if you saw it, to wash its location; and if you did not see it, to sprinkle water around it. I remember scraping it from the garment of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he would pray in it.” Reported by Muslim.
It is therefore best to wash its trace when wet and remove it by scraping or washing when dry. The entire garment does not have to be changed.
Madhiy: Characteristics and Rulings
Madhiy is a thin, sticky fluid that is usually clear or whitish. It may be discharged when thinking about intercourse, becoming aroused, or engaging in foreplay. A person may not notice its discharge. It is not normally discharged forcefully and is not followed by the bodily relaxation associated with maniy.
Madhiy is discharged by both men and women and may be frequent in some people. Its abundance does not turn it into maniy and does not require ghusl as long as the fluid is madhiy.
Madhiy is impure and invalidates wudu, but it does not require ghusl. Whoever discharges madhiy should do the following:
- 1A man washes his penis and testicles; a woman washes its exit and whatever it touches on the exterior of her private area or body.
- 2The affected part of the garment is purified; sprinkling the area with enough water to cover it is sufficient.
- 3Perform wudu for prayer.
Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “I was a man who frequently discharged madhiy, and I kept performing ghusl until my back cracked. This was mentioned to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘Do not do that. When you see madhiy, wash your penis and perform the wudu you perform for prayer. When you discharge water forcefully, then perform ghusl.’” Reported by Abu Dawud and authenticated by scholars.
Abdullah ibn Sad al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “I asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about what requires ghusl and about the fluid that comes after fluid. He said: ‘That is madhiy, and every male discharges madhiy. Wash your private part and your testicles from it, and perform the wudu you perform for prayer.’” Reported by Abu Dawud and authenticated by scholars.
Sahl ibn Hunayf, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “I experienced great difficulty because of madhiy and used to perform ghusl frequently. I asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about it, and he said: ‘Wudu is sufficient for you because of it.’ I asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, what about what reaches my garment?’ He replied: ‘It is sufficient to take a handful of water and sprinkle the part of your garment where you think it reached.’” Reported by Abu Dawud and graded hasan by scholars.
A person who discharges madhiy should not perform ghusl every time, change all clothing, or wash the entire body. This reflects the ease of the Shariah and its protection against waswas and hardship.
Wadi: Characteristics and Rulings
Wadi is a thick or cloudy white fluid that usually emerges after urination and may emerge when lifting something heavy. It is unrelated to sexual desire, is not discharged forcefully, and is not followed by bodily relaxation.
Wadi has the same ruling as urine: it is impure, invalidates wudu, and does not require ghusl. Whoever discharges wadi washes its exit and whatever it touches on the body or garment, then performs wudu for prayer.
Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, said: “There are maniy, madhiy, and wadi. As for madhiy and wadi, one washes the penis and performs wudu; as for maniy, it requires ghusl.” Reported as a statement of Ibn Abbas by al-Tahawi and others through hasan chains.
A man is not required to wash his testicles because of wadi as he does for madhiy. He washes whatever the wadi touched at its exit, on the body, or on the garment, then performs wudu.
A Practical Comparison of the Three Fluids
By Cause of Discharge
- •Maniy: It is discharged at sexual climax or its trace is found after a sexual dream.
- •Madhiy: It is usually discharged during thoughts, arousal, or foreplay and may emerge without being noticed.
- •Wadi: It usually emerges after urination and may emerge when lifting something heavy, without sexual desire.
By Characteristics
- •A man’s maniy: Usually thick and white, discharged forcefully with pleasure, followed by relaxation.
- •A woman’s maniy: Usually thin and yellow, though it may be white, and is recognized through the circumstances of its discharge.
- •Madhiy: Thin and sticky, clear or whitish, and not followed by relaxation.
- •Wadi: Thick or cloudy white, resembling urine in its cause and ruling.
By Purification Ruling
- •Maniy: Requires ghusl when its recognized cause is established.
- •Madhiy: Requires washing the affected area and performing wudu, not ghusl.
- •Wadi: Requires washing the affected area and performing wudu, not ghusl.
These characteristics are common indicators, not independent tests. A fluid is not classified by color alone; its cause, characteristics, accompanying circumstances, and what follows it should all be considered.
How to Identify the Fluid and Apply the Ruling
Follow these steps without exaggeration or repeated inspection:
- 1Consider the immediate cause: Was it after a sexual dream or climax, during mere arousal, or after urination?
- 2Consider the ordinary visible characteristics without exhausting scrutiny.
- 3If it is maniy, perform ghusl from janabah.
- 4If it is madhiy, wash the affected area, sprinkle the affected place on the garment, then perform wudu.
- 5If it is wadi, wash the affected place on the body and garment, then perform wudu.
- 6If no fluid is seen, or the matter is merely a sensation or suspicion, ghusl is not required and an existing wudu is not considered invalid based only on doubt. A person who wakes from deep sleep performs wudu because of the sleep itself, not because of an imagined discharge.
If a person is certain that a fluid emerged but cannot identify it after a reasonable consideration of its cause and characteristics, some cases of uncertainty involve scholarly detail. The person should ask a trustworthy scholar about the specific case and must not turn possibilities into a reason for repeating ghusl and wudu.
Rulings for Women and Ongoing Discharge
Do Women Discharge Maniy and Madhiy?
Yes. The hadith of Umm Sulaym, may Allah be pleased with her, shows that a woman may see fluid and must perform ghusl when it is established as maniy. A woman may also discharge madhiy during arousal; its ruling is to wash the affected area and perform wudu, not ghusl.
Is Every Vaginal Discharge Maniy or Madhiy?
No. Ordinary vaginal discharge is a separate subject, and every moisture should not be classified as maniy or madhiy. The distinction depends upon the place, cause, and characteristics; discharge may be natural or related to a medical condition.
For details, read Does Vaginal Discharge Break Wudu?.
Must the Interior Be Washed?
No. What is required is washing the exterior of the private area and whatever the fluid touched. Water does not have to be inserted internally, whether during istinja or ghusl from janabah.
Intermittent and Ongoing Discharge
If madhiy or wadi is occasional and intermittent, the person waits for its normal cessation as long as doing so will not cause the prayer time to end, then washes the area, performs wudu, and prays.
If the discharge continues so that, throughout the prayer time, there is no interval sufficient for purification and prayer, the person has the ruling of someone with an ongoing excuse. The person takes reasonable measures to prevent the impurity from spreading, washes what is possible, performs wudu after the prayer time begins, then prays; discharge during that time because of the continuing excuse does not cause harm. If the discharge stops for enough time to purify oneself and pray, the person prays during that interval.
A person should not classify himself or herself as having a continuing excuse because of one or a few occurrences. The actual continuity must be considered, and a trustworthy scholar should be consulted if the situation is unclear. A physician should also be consulted if the discharge is unusual or accompanied by pain, blood, or a concerning odor.
Certainty and Avoiding Waswas
The basic rule is that purity remains until a person is certain that something emerged. Whoever doubts whether a fluid emerged should not inspect the garment or body, squeeze the urinary opening, or repeat looking and washing. Ghusl is not required merely because of a dream, thought, or internal sensation unless its legally recognized cause is present.
Abbad ibn Tamim narrated from his uncle, may Allah be pleased with him, that he complained to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about a man who imagines that he feels something during prayer. He said: “He should not leave or turn away until he hears a sound or detects an odor.” Agreed upon.
The meaning is that certainty is not removed by doubt, not that every invalidator is established only by a sound or odor. Whoever is certain that a fluid emerged acts according to its ruling; whoever is not certain ignores the suspicion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does madhiy require ghusl?
No. Madhiy does not require ghusl. A man washes his penis and testicles; a woman washes its exit and whatever it touched on the exterior of her body; the affected area of the garment is purified; then the person performs wudu.
Does wadi require ghusl?
No. Wadi has the same ruling as urine. Its exit and whatever it touched on the body or garment are washed, then wudu is performed.
Must the entire garment be changed because of madhiy or wadi?
The entire garment does not have to be changed. For madhiy, it is sufficient to sprinkle the affected area with enough water to cover it. For wadi, the affected area is washed because it has the same ruling as urine.
Must clothing be changed because of maniy?
It does not have to be changed. The stronger view is that maniy is pure, so prayer is not invalid merely because its trace remains on the garment. It is best, however, to remove the trace: wash it while wet, and scrape or wash it when dry.
Is ghusl required after a sexual dream when no fluid is found?
No. Whoever remembers a sexual dream but finds no fluid does not have to perform ghusl. Whoever finds maniy after sleep must perform ghusl even if no dream is remembered.
What should someone do after finding moisture upon waking?
If its signs establish that it is maniy, ghusl is required. If it is identified as madhiy or wadi, wash the affected area and perform wudu. If the moisture is ordinary discharge, sweat, or something else, it follows its own ruling. Janabah is not established through a remote possibility or waswas.
What if a fluid resembling maniy emerges because of illness or injury?
If it is discharged while awake because of illness or injury, without pleasure, forceful discharge, or subsequent relaxation, the stronger view is that ghusl is not required, though its trace is washed and wudu is performed. Finding it after sleep requires ghusl when it is verified to be maniy, even if the sleeper remembers no dream.
Must ghusl be repeated if a remainder of maniy emerges afterward?
If a remainder of maniy emerges after ghusl without renewed desire, the stronger view is that ghusl does not have to be repeated; the area is washed and wudu is performed. If new maniy is discharged with new pleasure, ghusl is required again.
What is the ruling if a husband’s maniy emerges from a woman after ghusl?
Likewise, if some of her husband’s maniy emerges from a woman after she has performed ghusl, she does not repeat ghusl merely because it emerged. She washes the exterior and performs wudu because this is not new maniy discharged from her with desire.
Does pleasure alone require ghusl?
The mere experience of pleasure or reaching climax does not require ghusl unless maniy is discharged, except when intercourse occurs; intercourse requires ghusl even without ejaculation. There is no need to inspect afterward. The ruling is based upon what is apparent and certain.
Does intercourse without ejaculation require ghusl?
Yes. Penetration requires ghusl for both spouses even without ejaculation because intercourse is an independent cause that requires ghusl.
What is the evidence that intercourse requires ghusl without ejaculation?
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “When he sits between her four parts and exerts himself with her, ghusl becomes obligatory, even if he does not ejaculate.” Agreed upon; the additional wording is from Muslim.
Does a small amount of madhiy invalidate wudu?
Yes. A small or large amount of madhiy invalidates wudu when its discharge is certain. Mere doubt or a sensation without certainty is ignored.
What should someone do if madhiy emerges during prayer?
If a person praying is certain that madhiy emerged, purification has ended. The person stops the prayer, washes the affected area, purifies the garment where necessary, performs wudu, and repeats the prayer. If there is only doubt, the prayer is not interrupted.
What if madhiy is found after prayer?
If the person is certain it emerged before or during the prayer, the affected area is washed, wudu is performed, and that prayer is repeated. If there is doubt whether it emerged before or after the prayer, the prayer is not repeated because prayer is not invalidated by doubt.
What if maniy is found after prayer or after several prayers?
If it is verified to be maniy, ghusl is required for future prayers. If the person is certain that it emerged before a particular prayer, all prayers performed after its discharge without ghusl are repeated. If the time of discharge is unknown or there is uncertainty between several periods of sleep, scholarly detail applies to identifying which prayers must be repeated. A trustworthy scholar should be asked about the specific case, and the person should not repeatedly inspect or base rulings on mere possibilities and waswas.
Must water be inserted into the urinary passage or vagina?
No. It is required to wash the exterior of the exit and whatever the fluid touched. Water should not be inserted into the passage, nor should a person strain to squeeze out what may remain inside, because this opens the door to waswas and may cause harm.
Does touching these fluids invalidate wudu?
Merely touching these fluids does not invalidate wudu, but whatever must be washed from the hand or body should be washed. Directly touching the private part without a barrier has a separate ruling explained in Nullifiers of Wudu.
Does contact with another person’s maniy require ghusl?
A person upon whose body another person’s maniy falls does not have to perform ghusl merely because of contact with it; its trace is removed. Ghusl is connected to the state of janabah, not merely to touching maniy.
Does a sensation of fluid moving internally invalidate wudu?
No. Wudu is not invalidated until the fluid is known to have emerged to the exterior of its exit. A mere sensation of movement inside establishes no ruling, and inspection to verify it is not prescribed.
Is wudu sufficient when ghusl is required?
Wudu alone is not sufficient when a cause requiring ghusl is established; ghusl from janabah is required. For madhiy and wadi, washing the affected area, purifying the garment, and performing wudu are sufficient.
Common Mistakes
- •Treating every fluid discharged from the private area as maniy that requires ghusl.
- •Performing ghusl because of madhiy even though the Sunnah establishes that washing the area and performing wudu are sufficient.
- •Treating wadi as maniy because it is white or thick, although it usually emerges after urination and has the same ruling as urine.
- •Relying on color alone while ignoring the cause of discharge and the remaining signs.
- •Changing all clothing when the affected area can be purified.
- •Repeated inspection and squeezing the urinary opening to make sure nothing has emerged.
- •Repeating ghusl or wudu because of doubt after purification has been completed.
- •Confusing ordinary vaginal discharge with maniy and madhiy.

Conclusion
The practical distinction is clear: maniy requires ghusl when its recognized cause is established, whereas madhiy and wadi do not require ghusl; their affected areas are washed and wudu is performed. Maniy is generally distinguished by sexual climax and the relaxation that follows; madhiy is generally associated with arousal without forceful discharge or relaxation; and wadi usually emerges after urination without desire. Whoever recognizes these signs applies the correct ruling without negligence, and whoever lacks certainty does not base worship upon doubt and waswas.
