Voluntary PrayerNight Prayer and Tahajjud: Time, Rak'ahs, Witr, and How to Pray
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all worlds. May Allah's peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his Companions.
Night prayer is among the greatest acts of worship and is the best voluntary prayer after the obligatory prayers. It does not require a Muslim to pray for a long time or perform many rak'ahs. One may begin with two rak'ahs before sleeping or rise during the final part of the night, pray whatever is manageable, and then conclude with Witr. A small amount maintained with humility is better than a large amount that becomes burdensome and is abandoned.
{وَالَّذِينَ يَبِيتُونَ لِرَبِّهِمْ سُجَّدًا وَقِيَامًا}“And those who spend the night before their Lord, prostrating and standing.” [Al-Furqan 25:64]
{كَانُوا قَلِيلًا مِنَ اللَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ * وَبِالأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ}“They used to sleep only a little during the night, and before dawn they would seek forgiveness.” [Al-Dhariyat 51:17-18]
Ruling and Virtue
The Best Voluntary Prayer After the Obligatory Prayer
Night prayer is an emphasized Sunnah and is not obligatory upon Muslims. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, explained its rank by describing it as the best prayer after the obligatory prayers:
«أَفْضَلُ الصِّيَامِ بَعْدَ رَمَضَانَ شَهْرُ اللَّهِ المُحَرَّمُ، وَأَفْضَلُ الصَّلَاةِ بَعْدَ الفَرِيضَةِ صَلَاةُ اللَّيْلِ».“The best fasting after Ramadan is during Allah's month of Muharram, and the best prayer after the obligatory prayer is the night prayer.”
Narrated by Muslim (1163).
The Difference Between Qiyam al-Layl and Tahajjud
In this article, night prayer means the voluntary prayer performed after Isha, whether before or after sleeping. Some scholars use the expression more broadly to include nighttime recitation, remembrance, and dua. Tahajjud is also used for night prayer, although some scholars apply it specifically to prayer performed after sleeping.
Anyone who prays two rak'ahs after Isha with the intention of night prayer has performed qiyam, even without sleeping first. A person who sleeps, wakes, and prays has performed both night prayer and tahajjud. This terminological distinction does not change the prayer's form or the rulings explained here.
How Is Tarawih Related to Night Prayer?
Tarawih is the night prayer of Ramadan. It was given this name because people gathered for it and traditionally rested between its sets of rak'ahs. The rulings concerning the time and number of rak'ahs of night prayer apply in Ramadan and outside it, while standing in prayer during Ramadan has its own special virtue.
The Time of Night Prayer
From After Isha Until True Dawn
The time of the night prayer discussed here begins after performing Isha and ends when true dawn begins.
Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said:
«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي فِيمَا بَيْنَ أَنْ يَفْرُغَ مِنْ صَلَاةِ العِشَاءِ إِلَى الفَجْرِ إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً، يُسَلِّمُ بَيْنَ كُلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ، وَيُوتِرُ بِوَاحِدَةٍ».“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to pray eleven rak'ahs between finishing Isha and dawn, concluding with salam after every two rak'ahs and praying Witr with one rak'ah.”
Narrated by Muslim (736).
The entire night after Isha is a time for prayer. Whoever fears not waking should pray and perform Witr before sleeping. Whoever is confident of waking should preferably place the prayer and Witr at the end of the night.
The Best Time: The Last Third of the Night
The final third of the night is the best time. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
.“Our Lord, Blessed and Exalted, descends every night to the lowest heaven when the final third of the night remains and says: Who is calling upon Me so that I may answer him? Who is asking Me so that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness so that I may forgive him?”
Agreed upon: al-Bukhari (1145) and Muslim (758).
We affirm for Allah, Exalted is He, the attribute of descent as it came in the hadith: a real descent befitting His majesty, without distortion or denial, and without asking how or likening Him to His creation. Allah says: {لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ البَصِيرُ} “There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.” [Al-Shura 42:11]
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed at the beginning, middle, and end of the night, although most of his later practice was at its end. Whoever can wake should pray in the final third. Whoever finds that difficult should pray before sleeping rather than abandon night prayer.
How Is the Last Third Calculated?
The night is calculated from sunset until true dawn, not from Isha until Fajr. Divide that duration into three equal portions; the final portion is the last third.
If sunset is at 6:00 p.m. and true dawn is at 6:00 a.m., the night is twelve hours long. Each third is four hours, so the final third begins at 2:00 a.m. and ends at dawn.
The time changes according to location and season, so use the accurate Maghrib and Fajr times for your area.
Number of Rak'ahs and Prayer Method
How Many Rak'ahs Is Night Prayer?
Night prayer has no obligatory number and no maximum that may not be exceeded. Pray in sets of two rak'ahs and then conclude with Witr. A person who prays only two rak'ahs has performed night prayer. If someone can manage only a single rak'ah of Witr, it fulfills Witr, and the person is rewarded for what was prayed.
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
«صَلَاةُ اللَّيْلِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى، فَإِذَا خَشِيَ أَحَدُكُمُ الصُّبْحَ صَلَّى رَكْعَةً وَاحِدَةً تُوتِرُ لَهُ مَا قَدْ صَلَّى».“The night prayer is two by two. If one of you fears the arrival of dawn, let him pray one rak'ah that makes what he has prayed odd.”
Agreed upon: al-Bukhari (990) and Muslim (749).
“Two by two” means concluding with salam after every two rak'ahs. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not give the questioner a maximum number, showing that the matter is broad.
The Prophet's Practice Regarding the Number
The Prophet's usual practice, peace and blessings be upon him, was eleven rak'ahs including Witr. Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said:
«مَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَزِيدُ فِي رَمَضَانَ وَلَا فِي غَيْرِهِ عَلَى إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً».“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did not pray more than eleven rak'ahs in Ramadan or outside it.”
Agreed upon: al-Bukhari (1147) and Muslim (738).
Authentic reports also mention thirteen rak'ahs. Eleven or thirteen are among the best forms for someone able to pray them with humility and calmness.
This does not make eleven a maximum. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, explained that night prayer is two by two without setting a maximum. Whoever prays two, four, six, or eight and then Witr has done well, and there is no problem with adding more. A longer prayer with sound recitation and humility is better than rushing merely to achieve a large number.

How to Pray the Night Prayer Step by Step
Its form does not differ from other prayers. The following is a concise method:
1Perform wudu, face the qiblah, and cover the awrah.
2Intend night prayer in the heart without pronouncing the intention.
3It is recommended to begin with two light rak'ahs. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “When one of you rises at night, let him begin his prayer with two light rak'ahs.” Narrated by Muslim (768).
4Then pray two rak'ahs at a time, concluding each pair with salam.
5Recite al-Fatihah and whatever is easy from the Quran, remaining calm in bowing and prostration.
6Conclude the prayer with Witr if you have not already performed it.
Anyone who needs to review the prayer's pillars and remembrances can consult How to Pray Salah Correctly Step by Step.
Recitation, Dua, and Khushu
What Should Be Recited?
The Shariah has not assigned particular surahs to night prayer. After al-Fatihah, recite whatever is easy, whether short or long surahs according to your ability.
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to lengthen his recitation, bowing, and prostration. He said:
«أَفْضَلُ الصَّلَاةِ طُولُ القُنُوتِ».“The best prayer is that with a long standing.”
Narrated by Muslim (756). Here, qunut means a long standing.
Lengthening the prayer is recommended for the person able to do so; it is not a condition for a valid night prayer. If lengthening causes boredom or leads to abandoning prayer, recite what is manageable while remaining calm and reflecting upon the recitation. A person may repeat a memorized surah and does not need to memorize long surahs before beginning night prayer.
Someone praying alone may recite aloud or quietly, choosing whichever produces greater humility, provided it does not disturb someone sleeping, praying, or reciting.
Dua During Night Prayer
A Muslim may supplicate in prostration, between the two prostrations with the reported words, and after the tashahhud before salam. During the final part of the night, increase in seeking forgiveness and asking Allah for the good of this world and the Hereafter.
There is no single dua that must be said in every tahajjud. Supplicate with established duas and whatever good you need, without transgressing in supplication or consistently treating an unestablished formula as a special Sunnah of night prayer.
Khushu is more important than varying and lengthening duas. See What Is Khushu in Salah and How Can You Achieve It?.
Night Prayer and Witr
How Is Witr Connected to Night Prayer?
Witr is the conclusion of night prayer; it is not a name for all night prayer. The easiest method is to pray two rak'ahs at a time and then conclude with one rak'ah that makes the number odd.
Someone who fears not waking near the end of the night should perform Witr before sleeping. Someone who expects to wake should delay Witr until the end. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
«مَنْ خَافَ أَلَّا يَقُومَ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ فَلْيُوتِرْ أَوَّلَهُ، وَمَنْ طَمِعَ أَنْ يَقُومَ آخِرَهُ فَلْيُوتِرْ آخِرَ اللَّيْلِ؛ فَإِنَّ صَلَاةَ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ مَشْهُودَةٌ، وَذَلِكَ أَفْضَلُ».“Whoever fears that he will not rise during the final part of the night should perform Witr at its beginning. Whoever expects to rise at its end should perform Witr at the end, for prayer at the end of the night is witnessed, and that is better.”
Narrated by Muslim (755).
Details about the number and forms of Witr and its qunut are available in Rawatib Sunnah Prayers and Witr.
What If Someone Prayed Witr and Then Woke Up?
A person who performed Witr before sleeping and later wakes may pray in sets of two without repeating Witr. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
«لَا وِتْرَانِ فِي لَيْلَةٍ».“There are no two Witr prayers in one night.”
Narrated by Abu Dawud (1439), al-Tirmidhi (470), and al-Nasa'i (1679); authenticated by al-Albani.
Someone confident of waking should preferably delay Witr so it is the final prayer. But a person who has already prayed Witr and later feels able to pray should not refrain from night prayer.
Congregation, Home, and Making Up a Routine
May Night Prayer Be Performed in Congregation?
Outside Ramadan, the basic practice is to perform night prayer individually, although it is permissible to pray it occasionally with another person. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, prayed with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, as recorded in the two Sahih collections. Hudhayfah and Ibn Masud, may Allah be pleased with them, also prayed with him, as recorded in Sahih Muslim.
Outside Ramadan, night prayer should not be made into a regularly scheduled congregation with a fixed time and form, because this was not transmitted from the Prophet's guidance, peace and blessings be upon him, or the practice of his Companions. In Ramadan, Tarawih is prescribed in congregation, and whoever stands with the imam until he leaves receives the reward of standing for an entire night.
Voluntary prayer is generally better at home. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The best prayer of a person is in the home, except for the obligatory prayer.” Agreed upon: al-Bukhari (731) and Muslim (781). An exception is a prayer for which congregation is prescribed, such as Tarawih in Ramadan.
May a Missed Nightly Routine Be Made Up?
Night prayer is voluntary, so missing it is not sinful. A person who has an established nightly routine but is overcome by sleep or illness is prescribed to make it up during the day in an even number, after the sun has risen and before Dhuhr.
Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said:
«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا غَلَبَهُ نَوْمٌ أَوْ وَجَعٌ عَنْ قِيَامِ اللَّيْلِ صَلَّى مِنَ النَّهَارِ ثِنْتَيْ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً».“When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was overcome by sleep or pain and missed his night prayer, he prayed twelve rak'ahs during the day.”
Narrated by Muslim (746).
A person whose normal routine was eleven rak'ahs including Witr makes it up as twelve during the day because Witr is not prescribed during the daytime.
Frequently Asked Questions
Question and AnswerIs Sleeping First Required for Tahajjud or Night Prayer?
Sleeping is not a condition for a valid night prayer. A person who prays after Isha and before sleeping has performed night prayer. Some scholars specifically call prayer after sleep tahajjud, but the worship is valid in both circumstances.
Question and AnswerIs Night Prayer Prescribed for Women?
Yes. Its recommendation, time, and method are the same for women and men. A woman performs it in her home according to what is manageable.
Question and AnswerMay Night Prayer Be Performed While Traveling?
Yes. Night prayer and Witr are prescribed both while traveling and while at home. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, maintained Witr during travel.
Question and AnswerMay Night Prayer Be Performed While Sitting?
A voluntary prayer may be performed while sitting even by someone able to stand, but standing is better. The reward of the able person who prays seated is half the reward of the one who stands. A person unable to stand is not blameworthy and may be credited with what was habitually performed while standing when illness or another excuse prevents it.
Question and AnswerWhat Should Someone Do When Overcome by Drowsiness?
If drowsiness becomes so strong that the person does not know what is being said, the Sunnah is to sleep until it passes. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
«إِذَا نَعَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَلْيَرْقُدْ حَتَّى يَذْهَبَ عَنْهُ النَّوْمُ».“If one of you becomes drowsy during prayer, let him sleep until the drowsiness leaves him.”
Agreed upon: al-Bukhari (212) and Muslim (786).
Night prayer must not become a reason for missing Fajr or neglecting another duty that cannot be delayed.
How to Remain Consistent
Begin with What You Can Maintain
The closest path to consistency is to begin with what is manageable. Choose two rak'ahs and a time that suits your circumstances, then add more when you have the energy without burdening yourself with something you cannot sustain.
Sleeping early, leaving unnecessary late-night activity, and setting a realistic time all help. If you do not trust yourself to wake, pray whatever is manageable and perform Witr before sleeping. Do not delay Witr based only on an intention you may not fulfill.
Do not attach this worship to a large number or lengthy recitation. Two rak'ahs maintained with humility are better than a few energetic days followed by stopping altogether.
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
«أَحَبُّ الأَعْمَالِ إِلَى اللَّهِ أَدْوَمُهَا وَإِنْ قَلَّ».“The deeds most beloved to Allah are those maintained consistently, even if they are few.”
Agreed upon: al-Bukhari (6465) and Muslim (783).
Important Reminders
Sleeping first is not required for a valid night prayer, and eleven rak'ahs is not a maximum that may not be exceeded. The purpose is to worship Allah with humility and calmness, not rush to complete a large number.
Someone who performed Witr early and later rises does not repeat Witr. Do not assign particular surahs or duas to night prayer while believing they have a special unestablished virtue. Do not remain awake for a voluntary prayer until Fajr is missed or another duty is neglected, and do not abandon night prayer entirely simply because lengthy prayer is not manageable.

Conclusion
A Practical BeginningTwo Rak'ahs After Isha
A beginning manageable for most people is two calm rak'ahs after Isha, followed by Witr before sleeping for someone not confident of waking.
Once that habit is established, add whatever is manageable and move the prayer to the end of the night whenever possible.
And Allah knows best. May Allah's peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his Companions.
