Laylat al-Qadr: Its Virtues, How to Seek It, Its Signs and the Prescribed Dua

All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds. May Allah send salah and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his Companions.

As the last ten nights approach, questions about Laylat al-Qadr return. Is it the twenty-seventh? Can you recognise it by how you feel or what you see at sunrise? Some people end up spending more time tracking signs than doing the worship prescribed during these nights.

The Sunnah is to seek it through worship throughout the last ten, not to wait for a sign before beginning to pray and make dua. Someone whose prayer coincides with it, with faith and seeking Allah's reward, hopes for the virtue promised by the Prophet even without knowing it is Laylat al-Qadr.

Its Virtue in the Quran and Sunnah

Allah says:

{إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ . وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ . لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ . تَنَزَّلُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِمْ مِنْ كُلِّ أَمْرٍ . سَلَامٌ هِيَ حَتَّى مَطْلَعِ الْفَجْرِ}

Meaning: We sent it down on the Night of Decree. What will make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend during it, by their Lord's permission, with every matter. It is peace until dawn breaks. Al-Qadr 97:1-5.

It is the night on which Allah sent down the Quran. Worship during it is better than worship over a thousand months without Laylat al-Qadr. The angels descend, including Jibril, who is meant by the Spirit in the verse.

The Prophet said:

«وَمَنْ قَامَ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ».

Meaning: Whoever stands in prayer on Laylat al-Qadr with faith and seeking Allah's reward will have his previous sins forgiven. Al-Bukhari 2014, excerpt. This means believing Allah's promise and worshipping Him sincerely for His reward.

The promise is not a reason to neglect repentance. Ibn Baz explained that the forgiveness texts are understood alongside those requiring avoidance of major sins. Other people's rights remain binding; prayer does not erase debts or wrongs done to others. For more on seeking forgiveness, see The Virtue of Istighfar and Its Best Forms.

Its Name and the Annual Decree

The name relates to honour and greatness, and to decree. Allah says of the blessed night:

{فِيهَا يُفْرَقُ كُلُّ أَمْرٍ حَكِيمٍ}

Meaning: During it, every matter of wisdom is set out. Al-Dukhan 44:4.

Ibn Kathir explained that on Laylat al-Qadr the year's affairs, including lifespans and provision, are detailed from the Preserved Tablet to the recording angels. This annual decree is a detailing of the prior decree, as Ibn Baz explained. It does not mean that Allah acquires knowledge He previously lacked.

Allah's knowledge of everything precedes its occurrence. The Prophet taught that Allah wrote the decrees of creation fifty thousand years before creating the heavens and earth. Muslim 2653. The annual decree therefore does not mean Allah's knowledge changes or that dua operates outside His decree. A servant's worship and what Allah ordains for them are both within His knowledge and decree.

When Should We Seek Laylat al-Qadr?

It is in Ramadan and should be sought during its last ten nights, particularly the odd ones. The Prophet said:

«تَحَرَّوْا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي الْوِتْرِ مِنَ الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ».

Meaning: Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of Ramadan's last ten. Al-Bukhari 2017. Counting from the beginning of the month, these include the twenty-first, twenty-third, twenty-fifth, twenty-seventh and twenty-ninth. Nevertheless, the Sunnah is to strive throughout the ten; the Prophet exerted himself during them as he did not at other times. Muslim 1175.

Ibn Baz preferred the view that it moves among the last ten, with the twenty-seventh the most hopeful rather than fixed every year. Abu Said al-Khudri's report establishes that it occurred on the twenty-first in one year, when he saw mud and water on the Prophet's face after Fajr. Al-Bukhari 2018.

The last ten begin on the twenty-first night, at sunset after the twentieth day. Each night runs from sunset until true dawn, not from midnight, and its night-prayer period does not extend to sunrise. Continue making use of all the nights until Ramadan ends, whether the month has twenty-nine days or thirty.

Which Signs Are Established?

The Sun Rises Without Rays the Following Morning

Ubayy ibn Kab, may Allah be pleased with him, described its sign:

«وَأَمَارَتُهَا أَنْ تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ فِي صَبِيحَةِ يَوْمِهَا بَيْضَاءَ لَا شُعَاعَ لَهَا».

Meaning: Its sign is that the sun rises on its morning white, without rays. Muslim 762. This sign appears after the night has ended; it is not something to await before worshipping. A circulated sunrise photograph does not by itself establish that the reported description has been fulfilled.

The Report Describing the Night

Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet said:

«لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ لَيْلَةٌ سَمِحَةٌ، طَلِقَةٌ، لَا حَارَّةٌ وَلَا بَارِدَةٌ».

Meaning: Laylat al-Qadr is a pleasant, agreeable night, neither hot nor cold. Al-Tayalisi 2802, excerpt; authenticated by al-Albani in Sahih al-Jami 5475. Weather conditions alone do not establish which night it is, and you do not have to notice this description yourself to receive its reward.

Nor is the absence of rain a condition. Rain fell on the night described in Abu Said's authentic report in al-Bukhari 2018. Not every popular description is an established sign, and not everyone perceives every sign.

Must You Recognise the Night to Receive Its Reward?

No. Ibn Baz explained that someone whose prayer coincides with it, with faith and seeking reward, receives that virtue even without knowing it is Laylat al-Qadr.

A feeling of peace, tears or a dream is not conclusive proof of the date or the acceptance of a person's deeds. You may feel attentive one night and tired the next. Seek sincerity in worship rather than testing your feelings after each prayer. Established signs should not be denied, but you are not required to discover one before hoping for Allah's mercy.

The Dua the Prophet Taught Aishah

Aishah asked what to say if she came upon Laylat al-Qadr. The Prophet taught her:

«اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي».

Meaning: O Allah, You are Pardoning and love to pardon, so pardon me. Ibn Majah 3850. Al-Tirmidhi also narrated the report, 3513, and graded it hasan sahih. The Arabic wording here follows Ibn Majah's narration.

Repeat this dua with a sense of your need for Allah's pardon. The report sets no repetition count, and you may also ask for the other good you need in this life and the next. See Comprehensive Duas of the Prophet for other authentic supplications.

Worship During These Nights

Keep up the obligatory prayers and your other duties first. Then pray what you can at night, recite the Quran, remember Allah, make dua, give charity and help others. Night prayer is an emphasised Sunnah, not obligatory. Do not stay up for voluntary worship and then miss Fajr or neglect another duty.

Pray in pairs of rakahs, and offer Witr if you have not already done so. No newly invented prayer with a special count or specified surahs is prescribed for Laylat al-Qadr without evidence. For the method, time and rakahs, see Qiyam al-Layl and Tahajjud.

Itikaf and completing the Quran are not conditions for benefiting from the night. Strive according to your ability throughout the ten, rather than letting an inability to worship for long stop you doing what you can.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Twenty-Seventh Night Before or After Fasting the Twenty-Seventh Day?

It precedes that day. It begins at sunset after the twenty-sixth day and ends at dawn on the twenty-seventh. The evening after the twenty-seventh day begins the twenty-eighth night.

Is Laylat al-Qadr Always the Twenty-Seventh?

The twenty-seventh is among the most hopeful nights, but it cannot be declared Laylat al-Qadr every year. The preferred view followed here, held by Ibn Baz, is that it moves among the last ten. Seek it throughout them rather than restricting yourself to one night.

Do Clouds or Rain Rule Out Laylat al-Qadr?

No. Abu Said's report establishes that rain occurred. Nor does cloud obscuring sunrise mean someone who prayed the night has missed its virtue. Seeing the sign is not a condition of the reward.

I Felt No Special Concentration. Does That Mean I Missed It?

You cannot conclude that. Seek attentiveness, renew your intention and continue worshipping. The absence of a particular feeling does not prove you missed the night, just as a strong feeling is not certain proof that your deeds were accepted.

What Can a Menstruating Woman Do on Laylat al-Qadr?

She does not pray during menstruation, but may make dua, remember Allah, seek forgiveness and give charity. She can continue these acts of worship even though she cannot pray. For the rulings on recitation and touching the Mushaf, see Can a Menstruating Woman Read the Quran and Touch the Mushaf?.

I Slept for Part of the Night. Was All My Worship Lost?

No. Sleeping does not undo any valid worship you have already offered. There is no blame in sleeping to regain your strength, as Ibn Baz explained. Do what you can and seek Allah's reward. We cannot say exactly what any individual will receive; the promise concerns worship offered with faith and seeking His reward.

Is There a Special Prayer or Surah I Must Recite?

No invented prayer with a special count or form is prescribed, and reciting a particular surah is not a condition for attaining the night. Offer night prayer in the prescribed manner and recite what you can with calmness and care.

Should I Repeat the Dua for Pardon a Hundred or a Thousand Times?

You may repeat it often, but do not attribute a fixed count to the Sunnah without evidence or believe reaching that count is a condition for acceptance or attaining the night.

I Neglected the Earlier Nights. Should I Still Strive Now?

Yes. Repent and make use of the time remaining. Do not abandon the twenty-ninth or another remaining night because the twenty-seventh has passed. Ramadan has not yet ended, and worship does not depend on knowing the date.

Seek the Virtue Through Worship

You do not need an announcement confirming you found Laylat al-Qadr before praying and making dua. Enter each of the last ten nights hoping for Allah's pardon, protecting your obligations and doing the good you can. Hope well of your Lord while sincerely turning to Him.

We ask Allah to grant us prayer on Laylat al-Qadr with faith and seeking His reward, pardon us and help us worship Him well. May Allah send salah and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his Companions.
